Based on news report of CNPC in AllAfrica, this study investigates what image is constructed by African media, by what linguistic means, and what factors accounted for this construction. This study finds that AllAfrica, on one hand, shapes CNPC as an enormous international oil enterprise, on the other hand, it highlights CNPC as a stated-own company, stressing CNPC as a political con-spirator of Sudanese government. Specifically, in textual level, news reports use positive words to emphasize the contribution of CNPC to the economic development of Sudan. At the same time, news coverage also skillfully uses the words “control” to stress the political motivation behind the business activities of CNPC. In the dimension of discourse practice, news reports frequently quote the words from Chinese and Sudanese officials and repeatedly stress the significance of CNPC to the diplomatic relations between the two countries, which reflects the politicization construction of CNPC. In terms of social practice, under the influence of western ideology, African media tend to over-politicize the identity of CNPC as a state-backed oil enterprise and dilute the commercial meaning of this international large oil enterprise.
