In 2020, the COVID-19 broke out globally. China, as the first country to report the discovery of the COVID-19, attracted global attention. China’s humanistic thinking of “life above all else” and the implementation of “national unity” displayed in the process of fighting the epidemic have been widely supported and praised by the international community. However, based on ideological bias and international competition considerations, there were also some voices that reversed black and white and deliberately smeared China. Nominalization is the most important means of grammatical metaphor. Based on the two COVID-19 news reports concerning China from New York Times, with the method of Critical Discourse Analysis, the paper analyzes the usage of nominalization, and reveals the hidden ideology behind the language phenomenon.
