Cognitive Poetics is a new way of thinking about literature. It involves the application of cognitive linguistics and psychology to literary texts. Conceptual metaphor is an important element of Cognitive Poetics, which indicates that the study of metaphor has entered a new field from the traditional study of rhetoric and semantics. This essay studies conceptual metaphors in D. H. Lawrence’s Poem Snake from the perspective of Cognitive Poetics. The word “snake” not only serves as the poem’s title but also harbors profound and meaningful metaphorical explanations in the poem including “human” “cattle” “albatross” “sex” and “king”. This essay made a detailed analysis of these metaphors, besides, it also adopts a psychoanalytic thinking of Freud to explain the complex inner conflicts of the poet when creating the poem by means of metaphors, so as to help readers get a better understanding of the poem.
