Based on Fairclough’s three-dimensional analytical framework, the study selects the Winter Olympics news discourse of China Daily and The Guardian as the research corpus to explore the characteristics of discourse construction of Chinese and Western media. The findings show that both share topics such as sporting, cultural and social affairs from multiple perspectives. The Guardian, however, has given more ink to the controversies and conflicts in terms of China’s image, employing the reported speech with high intervention, thus suggesting an image of China, despite its sports and cultural strength, with problems in human rights and policy-making. This myriad, one-sided and negative image of China is closely related to Western news concepts, politics and socio-cultural contexts. Therefore, the cultivation of critical language awareness will play a positive and far-reaching influence on the establishment of foreign discourse system with Chinese characteristics, the good telling of Chinese stories and the good spreading of Chinese voices.
