“Guo” is a noun, usually denoting a country, and “Shi1” is a common ancient literary conjugation. The conjunction of “guoshi1” first appeared in the pre-Qin period, in which both were independent words, occasionally used in conjunction with each other, but not yet formed into a word. During the Western Han Dynasty, “guoshi1” became a word. After the Western Han Dynasty, there were not many instances of “guoshi1” being used as a word. In modern Chinese, “guoshi1” often used in the phrase “gong shang guo shi”. In the future, due to the limitations of “guoshi1” and the impact of “guoshi2”, “guoshi1” will be used less and less frequently and gradually be replaced by “guoshi2”.
