Interpreting is both a subjective and an ethical act. The interpreter’s choice of strategies is often guided by ethics. Chesterman’s traditional models of translation ethics consist of the ethics of rep-resentation, the ethics of service, the ethics of communication, and the norm-based ethics. Problems of applying these ethical principles include lack of clear boundaries and compatibility. Through a review of prior research on translation ethics, combined with a case study of excerpts of medical simultaneous interpretation, this study reveals that the ethics of commitment proposed later by Chesterman has a gluing effect on the conflicts among the first four models of translation ethics, and is conducive to enhancing the quality of interpreting. By applying Chesterman’s ethics of commit-ment to the analysis of the interpreters’ strategic choices, this study has contributed to interpreter training and professional development through better alignment between the interpreting practice and translation ethics.
