Throughout history, love has stood as a timeless and enduring theme, resonating across cultures, including both China and the West. Chinese idioms, rich in their depictions, vividly encapsulate the essence of love. Metaphor, being a fundamental aspect of human cognition, finds ample expression in the realm of love. Drawing upon the conceptual metaphor theory, this exploration delves into the metaphorical thinking about love prevalent among ancient people and further elucidates the met-aphorical categories and mapping process in love idioms, particularly through the lens of idioms. Love metaphors within idioms can be broadly classified into event metaphors, journey metaphors, and object metaphors. Further categorization based on diverse source domains reveals item meta-phors encompassing plant metaphors, natural landscape metaphors, and artifact metaphors. In conducting this analysis, it becomes evident that the mapping between the source domain and the target domain is not universally comprehensive but rather partial and selective. The examination of love metaphors in Chinese idioms represents only a fragment of the broader study of traditional Chinese culture. To comprehensively understand the metaphorical thinking of both ancient and contemporary minds, further research is warranted.
