Bonjour Tristesse, a novella published in 1954, was written by the French female author Françoise Sagan. This work uses a first-person narrative style to delve into the psychology of adolescents. The narrative structure of the novella predominantly utilizes “flashbacks”, employing a retrospective storytelling technique intertwined with a complex use of chronological order. While the overall timeline of the story is clear, it is characterized by intricate variations, playing a crucial role in character psychology and characterization, suggesting character destinies, and developing plotlines. The changes in verb tenses in French reflect temporal shifts and sequence, whereas, in Chinese, the temporal aspect cannot be discerned solely from verbs, deepening the translation challenges of complex temporal sequences in the text.
