Metaphor, as an essential cognitive tool, plays a pivotal role in shaping people’s thinking patterns and the way they understand the world by constructing specific cognitive architectures. In the field of literature, the use of metaphor not only makes language expression more refined but also plays an irreplaceable role in shaping distinctive and vivid characters and conveying profound emotional connotations. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the use of metaphor in John Steinbeck’s masterpiece “The Chrysanthemums” by applying the theory of metaphor, based on which, we will further explore the image of Eliza, the heroine, and come up with the characteristics of her both masculine and feminine qualities. At the same time, we will interpret Eliza’s metamorphosis and the awakening of her feminist consciousness in the light of the concept of androgyny proposed by Virginia Woolf. As an important representative of feminist theory, the concept of androgyny reveals the awakening of women's self-consciousness, breaks down the inherited concepts, creates a new image of women in the field of literature, and exerts a profound influence on the liberation movement of feminist ideology.
