As a form of linguistic landscape, shop signs are ideal objects for studying the distribution and characteristics of language codes. This paper takes the street shop signs in suburban areas of Zhenjiang, Jiangsu Province, as its research subject, analyzing their language code distribution and characteristics. The study found that Chinese is the most dominant language code, occupying an important position in both the central and non-central linguistic landscapes. Both prominent and primary language codes are predominantly Chinese. English mainly stands out in terms of visual effect but is very limited in its usage. The construction of new towns has promoted the integration of English language codes, gradually making the linguistic landscape more urbanized. However, due to the residents’ adaptation challenges, a mixed and patchwork linguistic landscape has formed. The status of local dialects has been somewhat affected. This study can provide certain references for future suburban construction and neighborhood planning.
