The “What this says” discourse marker plays a key interactive role in conversation, and its main function is to express negation. In content, when “What this says” is used, it often means that the speaker disagrees with or denies the previous speaker’s point of view, reflecting a difference in the two sides’ cognition of something. On the emotional level, the mark may express dissatisfaction or blame for the previous speaker, conveying a negative emotional attitude and further highlighting the speaker’s subjective position. In fact, the formation of the discourse mark “What this says” is gradually completed in the synchronic level of modern Chinese. From the initial reminder to the negative content, and then to the negative feelings of dissatisfaction and blame directed at the former speaker, this evolution process not only reveals the functional changes of discourse markers, but also reflects the dynamic and interactive nature of language use. From the perspective of interaction, this paper explores the negative function of the independent discourse mark “What this says” and its formation motivation, aiming to reveal its important role and evolution mechanism in conversation.
