The Black Cat is a classic short story written by American writer Edgar Allan Poe. Based on a horrifying story of cat abuse and murder, it delves deeply into issues such as human nature, rationality, emotions, and psychological disorder, making it an important work in literary history. This paper compares and studies the Chinese translations by Cao Minglun and Chen Liangting, examining their different text classification methods and translation strategies from the perspectives of semantic translation and communicative translation, and the different reading experiences they bring to the target readers based on their different understandings of the original text. The research finds that Chen Liangting’s translation adheres to the characteristics of vocative text, with communicative translation as its primary strategy. In contrast, Cao Minglun’s translation emphasizes the characteristics of expressive text more prominently and tends to favor semantic translation in the selection of translation strategies.
