“Qing (箐)” is a toponymic word with regional characteristics. The toponyms of “Qing” are widely distributed in Southwest China, which is due to the geographical characteristics of the region with many forests and mountains. From the shape point of “Qing”, the word is from bamboo, and its meaning is related to bamboo. Qing has rich meanings and many cognate words. In the Eastern Zhou Dynasty, Qing was blue and black, which was the same origin as Qian (綪) and Qing (靘). Since the Tang and Song Dynasties, Qing said that the bamboo mat covering the coffin has the same origin as Qian (輤). Qing also said that small bamboo cages are of the same origin as those of Ling (笭), Xing (箵), Ying (籯) and Ting (䇸). During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Qing was a generalization of the name of bamboo to denote bamboo forest, and was widely used as a place name in Southwest China. In modern times, Qing only retains the meaning of the valley with bamboo groves, and other meanings are no longer used. The interpretation of the word “Qing (箐)” has certain reference value for the study of the characters of geographical names, national culture in Southwest China.
