Guided by Geoffrey Leech’s politeness principle and based on the uniqueness of children’s literature, this paper takes the English version of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and the Chinese version translated by Cheng Shi as the research object, discussing the violation of politeness principle in children’s literature. It is found that Cheng Shi effectively conveys the pragmatic meaning of “being impolite” by adding tone, enhancing emotion and clarifying connotation in the process of translation. The purpose of this study is to provide reference for improving the quality of children’s literature translation and cross-cultural communication.
