This paper explores and examines the construction of Eriko’s gender identity in Li’s translation of “Kitchen” from the perspective of poststructuralist feminist translation. By employing critical met-aphor analysis, it interprets the underlying gender ideologies embedded in the metaphors used in the translation and analyzes how these metaphorical expressions attempt to guide and construct gender realities. The study reveals that Li’s translation subverts the fluidity of Eriko’s gender iden-tity as presented in the original text. The implicit gender ideologies in Li’s translation reflect male-dominated power relations, which impact the reconstruction of Eriko’s gender identity in the translated work. Over the 18 years from the 2004 edition to the 2022 edition of Li’s translation, there have been profound changes in female consciousness in Chinese society. Resistance to tradi-tional power relations and a diverse understanding of gender connotations have led to the dissolu-tion of previous gender impressions through discourse. Given the contemporary conditions and new trends in feminist development, it is crucial for translators to critically reflect on the gender ideolo-gies hidden behind language, recognize the influence of metaphors on constructing gender realities, and pay attention to poststructuralist feminist translation within the Chinese context.
