Immunotherapy has become a powerful clinical strategy for the treatment of cancer. The number of approved immunotherapy drugs has been increasing, and many treatments have emerged in clinical and preclinical development. However, a key challenge to the widespread implementation of cancer immunotherapy remains the controlled regulation of the immune system, as these treatments have serious side effects, including autoim-munity and non-specific inflammation. Advanced biomaterials and drug delivery systems, such as nanoparticles and treatment with T cells, can effectively use immunotherapy and improve its effectiveness while reducing side effects. Here, we discuss the research progress, as well as the opportunities, challenges and applications of nano-delivery technology in tumor immunotherapy in order to improve the shortcomings of tumor immunotherapy.
