Vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) is a neurotransmitter primarily found in the central nervous system and the enteric nervous system. In the enteric nervous system, it is predominantly released by enteric neurons. It serves as both a gastrointestinal hormone and a neuropeptide with various functions. VIP holds therapeutic potential for several autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, and Sjögren’s syndrome. This article summarizes the involvement and effects of VIP in the occurrence and development of multiple autoimmune diseases, providing new insights for the treatment of the aforementioned conditions.
