With a lonely, pessimistic soul and a rebellious spirit, Emily Bronte created one of the greatest works in human literary history—Wuthering Heights, through which the novelist took a relentless criticism of the feature repressing the human nature and negating the self in western civilization. This theme is actually the artistic expression of the writer’s living predicament: The self struggles in the civilization cage, is divided and eager to escape from it but finds no way out. The paper mainly consists of three parts: Negation of the self in philosophy, negation of the self in Wuthering Heights and Emily Bronte’s concern of “the nonhuman in humanity”.
