The Light That Failed is the first novel of Rudyard Kipling, the first British winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, which reveals the tragic life of Dick Heldar,an artist and painter who went in vain in his pursuit of art, love and marriage and ended up with his death in the battlefield.Based on Aristotle’s theory on tragedy from Poetics, this thesis analyzes the major tragic element, plot,in the novel through close reading, and studies the reversal and recognition of tragedy in the work,so as to explore Kipling’s ingenious story construction ability and exquisite artistic expression, thus enhancing the appreciation of modern tragedy.
