Marcel Proust’s masterpiece In Search of Lost Time is a star in the history of French twen-tieth-century literature. His writing practice can be described as a great revolution in the history of novels, guiding the trend of a generation of literature. This work breaks the harmonious and unified narrative structure of traditional novels and is full of various “rebellious” factors. The complexity and contradiction shown by the characters form a sharp contrast with the traditional novels and constitute one of the important factors in the modernity of this work. An in-depth in-terpretation of the complexity of the characters in this work will provide an important basis for reading and understanding it. Exploring and interpreting the human mind is the mission that Proust has given to himself as an artist. This paper tries to analyze the complex and contradictory characteristics of the characters in In Search of Lost Time from the following three aspects: duality, false appearance and language’s ambiguity.
