The Ice People is one of the representative works of the famous contemporary British writer Maggie Gee. Envisioning the future British society afflicted by the climate crisis in 2050, this novel tells a dystopian story with the half-race Saul as the protagonist. It recreates the unique relationship between women and nature, presents a dark picture of the future world under ecological crisis, and reveals the identity dilemma of the distorted image of the other under the construction of patriarchal discourse. This paper employs ecofeminism and Connell’s theory of hegemonic masculinity to analyze how Maggie Gee denies and criticizes the hegemonic masculinity through Saul’s image, so as to reveal the female consciousness and ecological concern embedded in this novel.
