“Floating Clouds” is a full-length work by Japanese author Fumiko Hayashi. Set in a post-war society, the novel depicts the love-hate relationship between the protagonist, Tomioka, and several other characters, including his heroine Yukiko, the Vietnamese maid Rong, the innkeeper Sei, and his wife Kuniko, during and after the war. Tomioka’s selfish behavior, which is based on his own selfish desires, leads to the tragic deaths of all these women in the end. This paper adopts Freud’s psychoanalytic criticism to analyze the personality structure of the main character, Tomioka. Analyzing Tomioka’s ego, id, and superego helps to understand the different stages of Tomioka’s personality traits and the personality logic behind his behavior, who is deeply entangled in love and hate.
