This article clarifies how the narrative chant (tanci) Wopaozhuan has been disseminated through various texts, by reviewing relevant miscellanea and bibliographies. I investigate one particular edition of Wopaozhuan printed in wooden movable-type, owned by Waseda University Library, by analyzing its ownership stamps and commentaries. Despite being repeatedly prohibited from being re-published or staged since its first publication, Wopaozhuan survived all perils by being frequently renamed and revised. This has resulted in wide variation and dissemination in the hands of collectors. Wopaozhuan gives us an excellent example to understand how popular literary works, under official prohibition and popular acceptance, have been propagated to the present time.
