In relevance theory, relevance is seen as a characteristic of the discourse, thoughts, behaviors, situations, etc. that are input into the cognitive process. The cognitive principle and communication are the two major principles of relevance theory. This article is supported by the theory of relevance and analyzes the novel The Veil by British author William Somerset Maugham from two aspects: the expression of meaning and the expression of cultural connotations, discusses the importance of discourse relations and word choice in novel translation.展开更多

High-quality subtitle translation is essential for promoting Chinese culture globally. Chinese cinema has consistently been at the forefront of innovation, and the film Love Life Light has garnered widespread acclaim for its innovative and touching plot and narrative style. Translation activities viewed through the lens of relevance theory follow the “ostensive-inferential” process, aiming to achieve optimal relevance based on the information provided in the original text. By using optimal relevance as a guide and appropriately applying translation strategies and techniques, translators can more effectively convey the original author’s cognitive context and communicative intent. Movie dialogues rely heavily on context for their development. This paper investigates the translation of dialogues in Love Life Light from the perspective of relevance theory, hoping to offer more perspectives for research on Chinese film subtitle translation and the global dissemination of Chinese films.展开更多

Therefore, dialogue translation quality is essential for a detective novel to hold its appeal to readers across different languages and cultures. Based on this, this study selects Chinese translations of Agatha Christie’s detective novel Death on the Nile as research subject, and then conducts a comparative analysis of cases at the lexical and syntactic level under the guidance of relevance theory and its principle of optimal relevance. In the end, this study summarizes the differences between the two versions of character dialogue translations. It is hoped that the translation of character dialogues in detective novels can solve common translation problems in the lexical and syntactic level, and achieve optimal relevance under the guidance of relevance theory, thereby establishing effective communication between the original text and the translator, as well as between the target text and its target readers.展开更多
