As a branch of scientific and technological translation, medical translation has become an important part of international communication. Taking excerpts from Pediatric Liver Transplantation: A Clinical Guide published by Elsevier and its translations as the material for discussion to explore the guiding role of relevance translation theory in translation practice, with a view to contributing to the introduction of international medical achievements and the dissemination of Chinese medical culture. It finds that the theory can guide translation activities from the level of thinking through reasoning the author’s intention, enhancing the context effect, seeking the best connection, etc., so as to clarify the logic and content of the medical text and describe the medical information more accurately. At the same time, practice has also tested that the theory has its own limitations and can’t ideally solve all the problems in medical translation, and it needs to be improved in continuous practice.展开更多

Consequently, translating Chinese idioms is an intricate and essential task. This paper, grounded in Relevance Translation Theory, uses “Red Rose, White Rose” translated by Karen S. Kingsbury’s as a case study to analyze the strategies employed in Chinese idiom translation. The study identifies three methods of Chinese idiom translation: literal translation, free translation, and borrowed translation, and explores how these strategies can achieve optimal relevance and enhance translation effectiveness, while also highlighting potential shortcomings in the translator’s approach. The paper emphasizes the importance of cultural understanding and contextual awareness, offering new perspectives and practical guidance for the English translation of Chinese idioms.展开更多

Strengthening the cross-cultural dissemination of Chinese culture is crucial in presenting a true, three-dimensional, and comprehensive image of China to the world. The promotion of culture-loaded words is of great importance. The relevance translation theory believes that translation is a cross-cultural “explicit-inference” process centered around the translator. With the help of parallel corpus, this paper analyzes the translation of culture-loaded words in Lu Xun’s story collection Wandering to explore how translators can use appropriate translation strategies to conduct cross-cultural communication between the original author and the target reader. It is found that free translation can help readers better grasp the context of the original text and achieve optimal relevance. This study aims to provide translators with new insights into the promotion of culture-loaded words, which is conducive to promoting the development of literary research and cross-cultural communication.展开更多
