Set in a future British city where civilization is on the verge of collapse, the novel focuses on the story of the transformation of Emily, the main character, from two worlds: the world outside the wall and the one inside the wall. The novel reproduces the distorted relationship between men and women under the traditional dichotomy and reveals the identity dilemma encountered by women. This paper synthesizes the ideas of deconstructionism and tries to point out that by depicting the transformation of Emily and Gerald’s relationship, Lessing shows the oppression of women under the traditional patriarchal system, skillfully deconstructs the idea of male-female dichotomy and implies that the path of mutual support is the only way to create a harmonious society of pluralism and coexistence.展开更多
