Extensive reading of text or material is dead and cannot provide a teaching model. How to talk about what to proceed from reality, according to the principle of gradual and orderly, according to the level of the students and the ability to accept. English newspapers as fresh language, popular novel, close to the life of a corpus source that is the college English teaching has always attached importance to the reference materials. According to the rhetorical characteristics of English newspapers, we set the course, it is best to learn some rhetorical knowledge after the students to open the course, English majors can learn after the rhetoric can also be extended as the rhetoric class and homework. As an ac...In this study, the author investigated insights of 15 college students majored in English as they explored their own use of annotation strategy and how they applied this strategy in effective reading process. As an action research, the report is an attempt to explore the role played by annotation in reading comprehension in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms. By means of learner diaries, the researcher found that annotation, as an efficient writing-to-learn strategy, is able to help EFL learners to research a deeper level of engagement and to encourage active reading. The findings also suggest that reading strategy training can be integrated with reading tasks in the EFL classrooms.展开更多
The present study aimed to investigate the application of the CLAN (Computerized Language Analysis) program in the CHILDES (Child Language Data Exchange System) on shared and unique words between storybooks. Sixty...The present study aimed to investigate the application of the CLAN (Computerized Language Analysis) program in the CHILDES (Child Language Data Exchange System) on shared and unique words between storybooks. Sixty sixth-grade Chinese-speaking children at an elementary school in Taipei City were recruited. Forty-four three-level of storybooks from Kizclub were collected and analyzed. Fifteen minutes reading instruction was followed by the use of CLAN on storybooks for 25 minutes. Children were given written and spoken vocabulary tests after each cluster of storybook reading period. There were three main findings of the study. First, young EFL (English as a Foreign Language) learners' word learning was enhanced through multiple exposures to the shared and unique words from the storybooks. Second, word instruction in isolation prompted written and spoken word learning beyond word instruction in context and repeated reading. Third, the results had pedagogical implications on the value and feasibility of language teaching with storybooks in promoting EFL students' word learning by using CLAN, and the limitations of the study were provided.展开更多
