This thesis studies the colored women in Jack London's works, probing into origins of his affections for and attitudes towards women on his myth-like life.

During the study period, the majority of particles were found to be either biological in origin, or from vehicle related combustion processes. Trends in the latter group of particles are explored further. Numbers of particles per cubic metre were determined at an hourly resolution over a period of six days, and were found to be significantly correlated with other traffic pollutants such as benzene and 1,3 butadiene, although there is no relationship with mass of PM10 as measured by a nearby UK Government monitoring station. We suggest in this paper that numbers of particles from car exhausts are more representative of traffic pollution than current estimates which use monitoring by mass.展开更多

The first chapter of the book introduces various basic concepts of structural optimization through several illustrative examples. Chapter 2 is devoted to a comprehensive review of math- ematical programming methods, including classical methods such as the simplex method, the (SLP) method, the interior point method and relatively new approaches such as genetic algo- rithms. The third chapter presents the main topic of this book, the SLP methods based on the incremental equations of structures. Some useful techniques in implementation of SLP, including the move limit, scaling and active constraint identifying, are discussed. In chapter 4, classical optimality criterion approaches, including the fully stress approach for truss struc- tures and its extensions for membrane and plate structures, are presented with demonstrative examples. The remaining chapters develop an overview of structural optimization problems, among which are dynamic optimization, multi-criterion optimization, earlier work on the op- timal layouts of plates, as well as some practical issues in general size and shape optimization problems.展开更多

It is considered as a model of American literature. This novel depicts how Buck turns from a dog to a leading wolf that returns to the nature. Buck reflects not only the figure of the author but also his aspirations and pursuits. When comparing Buck with the author, it can be said that to a large extent Buck is the author himself-the combination of reality and ideal.展开更多

London Clay is thickest in the west; thicker deposits extend as a narrow finger along the axis of the London Basin. More minor variations are probably governed by periglacial erosion and faulting. A shallow anticline in the Chalk in north-central London has resulted in a pronounced thinning of succeeding strata. These results are compared to the position of London Underground railway tunnels. Although tunnels have been bored through the upper levels of London Clay where thick, some tunnels and stations are positioned within the underlying, more lithologically variable, Lower London Tertiary deposits. Although less complex than other geological models of the London Basin, this technique is more objective and uses a higher density of borehole data. The high resolution of the resulting maps emphasises the power of modelling an expansive dataset in a rigorous but simnle fashion.展开更多
