This work investigated the microstructure and impact behavior of Mg-4Al-5RE-xGd(RE represents La-Ce mischmetal;x=0,0.2,0.7 wt.%)alloys cast by high-pressure die casting(HPDC),permanent mold casting(PMC),and sand casting(SC)techniques. The results indicated that with increasing Gd content, the grain sizes of the HPDC alloy had a slight change, but the grains of the PMC and SC alloys were significantly refined.Besides, the acicular Al_(11)RE_(3)phase was modified into the short-rod shape under the three casting conditions. The impact toughness of the studied alloy was mainly dominated by the absorbed energy during the crack initiation. With increasing Gd content, the impact toughness of the studied alloy monotonically increased due to the lower tendency of the modified second phase toward crack initiation. The impact stress was higher than the tensile stress, exhibiting a strain rate sensitivity for the mechanical response;however, the HPDC alloy had an inconsistent strain rate sensitivity during the impact event due to the transformation of the deformation mechanism from twinning to slip with increasing strain.Abundant dimples covered the fracture surface of the fine-grained HPDC alloys, indicating a typical ductile fracture.Nevertheless, due to the deficient{1012}twinning activity and the suppressed grain boundary sliding during the impact event, the HPDC alloys showed insufficient plastic deformation capacity. 展开更多

The microstructure and mechanical properties at different depths of squeeze-cast,solution-treated and aged Al−5.0Mg−3.0Zn−1.0Cu alloy were investigated. For squeeze-cast alloy, from casting surface to interior, the grain size ofα(Al)matrix and width of T-Mg32(AlZnCu)49 phase increase significantly, while the volume fraction of T phase decreases. The related mechanical properties including ultimate tensile strength(UTS)and elongation decrease from 243.7 MPa and 2.3%to 217.9 MPa and 1.4%,respectively.After solution treatment at 470℃ for 36 h,T phase is dissolved into matrix, and the grain size increases so that the UTS and elongation from surface to interior are respectively reduced from 387.8 MPa and 18.6%to 348.9 MPa and 13.9%.After further peak-aging at 120℃ for 24 h,numerous G.P.II zone andη′phase precipitate in matrix.Consequently,UTS values of the surface and interior increase to 449.5 and 421.4 MPa,while elongation values decrease to 12.5%and 8.1%,respectively. 展开更多

Effects of Mg content on the microstructure and mechanical properties of low Zn-containing Al−xMg−3Zn−1Cu cast alloys(x=3−5,wt.%)were investigated. As Mg content increased in the as-cast alloys, the grains were refined due to enhanced growth restriction, and the formation ofη-Mg(AlZnCu)_(2) and S-Al_(2)CuMg phases was inhibited while the formation of T-Mg_(32)(AlZnCu)_(49 )phase was promoted when Mg content exceeded 4 wt.%.The increase of Mg content encumbered the solution kinetics by increasing the size of eutectic phase but accelerated and enhanced the age-hardening through expediting precipitation kinetics and elevating the number density of the precipitates. As Mg content increased, the yield strength and tensile strength of the as-cast,solution-treated and peak-aged alloys were severally improved, while the elongation of the alloys decreased. The tensile strength and elongation of the peak-aged Al−5Mg−3Zn−1Cu alloy exceed 500 MPa and 5%,respectively.Precipitation strengthening implemented by T′precipitates is the predominant strengthening mechanism in the peak-aged alloys and is enhanced by increasing Mg content. 展开更多

Direct aging treatment is an important post-processing procedure, yet little research has been done on how it balances the mechanical properties and the stress removal for selective laser melted(SLMed)AlSi10Mg alloys. Here,we proposed a typical direct aging treatment on SLMed AlSi10Mg alloys, and studied the effects on their microstructure, properties and residual stress evolution. The results indi-cate that the as-built microstructure is mainly composed of fine cellularα-Al and reticulated Si phases, and some pre-existing precipitates and dislocations are found in these cells. The direct aging treatment promotes the precipitation of nano-scaled Si phases and preserves a network-like Si structure. Therefore, the strength of the peak-aged alloy increases while the ductility decreases. As the aging temperature in-creases from 160 to 200℃,aging hardening behavior was accelerated significantly.Aging at 160℃ for 4-9 h removes 32.0%-43.0%of the residual stress, which is attributed to the decomposition of the su-persaturatedα-Al matrix, the precipitation of the nano-Si phase and the exposure of low-angle grain boundaries(LAGBs).Considering the overal alloy performance obtained,over-aging at 160℃ for 4 h is the optimized heat treatment regime.Under this condition, the yield strength(YS),ultimate tensile strength(UTS)and elongation(EL)of the alloy in the transverse and longitudinal direction are 309.5 MPa,464.4 MPa and 8.3%and 286.4 MPa,464.9 MPa and 5.1%,respectively. 展开更多

This study investigates the eff ect of solution treatment(at 470°C for 0–48 h)on the microstructural evolution, tensile properties, and impact properties of an Al–5.0Mg–3.0Zn–1.0Cu(wt%)alloy prepared by permanent gravity casting. The results show that the as-cast microstructure consists ofα-Al dendrites and a network-like pattern of T-Mg32(AlZnCu)49 phases. Most of the T-phases were dissolved within 24 h at 470℃;and a further prolonging of solution time resulted in a rapid growth ofα-Al grains. No transformation from the T-phase to the S-Al2CuMg phase was discovered in this alloy. Both the tensile properties and impact toughness increased quickly, reached a maximum peak value, and decreased gradually as the solution treatment proceeded. The impact toughness is more closely related to the elongation, and the relationship between impact toughness and elongation appears to obey an equation:IT=8.43 EL-3.46.After optimal solution treatment at 470℃for 24 h,this alloy exhibits excellent mechanical properties with the ultimate tensile strength, yield strength, elongation and impact toughness being 431.6 MPa,270.1 MPa,19.4%and 154.7 kJ/m^(2),which are comparable to that of a wrought Al–6.0 Mg–0.7 Mn alloy(5E06,a 5 xxx aluminum alloy).Due to its excellent comprehensive combination of mechanical properties, this cast alloy has high potential for use in components which require medium strength, high ductility and high toughness. 展开更多

This study examines the relationship among cooling rate, microstructure and mechanical properties of a sand-casted Al-5.0 Mg-0.6 Mn-0.25 Ce(wt%)alloy subjected to T4 heat treatment(430℃×12 h+natural aging for 5 days),and the tested alloys with wall thickness varying from 5 to 50 mm were prepared. The results show that as the cooling rate increases from0.22 to 7.65 K/s,the average secondary dendritic arm spacing(SDAS,λ2)decreases from 94.8 to 27.3μm.The relation between SDAS and cooling rate can be expressed by an equation:λ2=53.0 Rc-0345.Additionally,an increase in cooling rate was shown not only to reduce the amount of the secondary phases, but also to promote the transition from Al10 Mn2 Ce toα-Al24(Mn,Fe)6Si2 phase.Tensile tests show that as the cooling rate increases from 0.22 to 7.65 K/s,the ultimate tensile strength(UTS)increases from 146.3 to 241.0 MPa and the elongation(EL)increases sharply from 4.4 to 12.2%for the ascast alloys.Relations of UTS and EL with SDAS were determined, and both the UTS and EL increase linearly with(1/λ2)0.5and that these changes can be explained by strengthening mechanisms. Most eutectic Al3Mg2 phases were dissolved during T4 treatment, which in turn further improve the YS,UTS and EL.However, the increment percent of YS,UTS and EL is affected by the cooling rate. 展开更多
