Layered rock mass is a type of engineering rock mass with sound mechanical anisotropy, which is generally unfavorable to the stability of underground works. To investigate the strength anisotropy of layered rock, the Mohr-Coulomb and Hoek-Brown criteria are introduced to establish the two transverse isotropic strength criteria based on Jaeger's single weak plane theory and maximum axial strain theory, and parameter determination methods.Furthermore, the sensitivity of strength parameters(K 1,K 2,and K 3)that are used to characterize the anisotropy strength of non-sliding failure involved in the strength criteria and confining pressure are investigated. The results demonstrate that strength parameters K 1 and K 2 affect the strength of layered rock samples at all bedding angles except for the bedding angle of 90°and the angle range that can cause the shear sliding failure along the bedding plane. The strength of samples at any bedding angle decreases with increasing K 1,whereas the opposite is for K 2.Except for bedding angles of 0°and 90°and the bedding angle range that can cause the shear sliding along the bedding plane,K 3 has an impact on the strength of rock samples with other bedding angles that the specimens'strength increases with increase of K 3.In addition, the strength of the rock sample increases as confining pressure rises.Furthermore, the uniaxial and triaxial tests of chlorite schist samples were carried out to verify and evaluate the strength criteria proposed in the paper. It shows that the predicted strength is in good agreement with the experimental results. To test the applicability of the strength criterion, the strength data of several types of rock in the literature are compared. Finally,a comparison is made between the fitting effects of the two strength criteria and other available criteria for layered rocks. 展开更多

Direct shear tests were conducted on sandstone specimens under different constant normal stresses to study the coalescence of cracks between non-persistent flaws and the shear sliding characteristics of the shear-formed fault.Digital image correlation and acoustic emission(AE)techniques were used to monitor the evolution of shear bands at the rock bridge area and microcracking behaviors. The experimental results revealed that the shear stresses corresponding to the peak and sub-peak in the stressdisplacement curve are significantly affected by the normal stress.Strain localization bands emerged at both the tip of joints and the rock bridge, and their extension and interaction near the peak stress caused a surge in the AE hit rate and a significant decrease in the AE b value.Short and curvilinear strain bands were detected at low normal stress, while high normal stress generally led to more microcracking events and longer coplanar cracks at the rock bridge area.Furthermore,an increase in normal stress resulted in a higher AE count rate and more energetic AE events during friction sliding along the shearformed fault. It was observed that the elastic energy released during the crack coalescence at the prepeak stage was much greater than that released during friction sliding at the post-peak stage.More than 75%of AE events were located in the low-frequency band(0e100 kHz),and this proportion continued to rise with increasing normal stress. Moreover, more AE events of low AF value and high RA value were observed in specimens subjected to high normal stress, indicating that greater normal stress led to more microcracks of shear nature. 展开更多

The damage of rock joints or fractures upon shear includes the surface damage occurring at the contact asperities and the damage beneath the shear surface within the host rock. The latter is commonly known as off-fault damage and has been much less investigated than the surface damage. The main contribution of this study is to compare the results of direct shear tests conducted on saw-cut planar joints and tension-induced rough granite joints under normal stresses ranging from 1 MPa to 50 MPa.The shear-induced off-fault damages are quantified and compared with the optical microscope observation. Our results clearly show that the planar joints slip stably under all the normal stresses except under 50 MPa,where some local fractures and regular stick-slip occur towards the end of the test. Both post-peak stress drop and stick-slip occur for all the rough joints. The residual shear strength envelopes for the rough joints and the peak shear strength envelope for the planar joints almost overlap. The root mean square(RMS)of asperity height for the rough joints decreases while it increases for the planar joint after shear, and a larger normal stress usually leads to a more significant decrease or increase in RMS.Besides, the extent of off-fault damage(or damage zone)increases with normal stress for both planar and rough joints, and it is restricted to a very thin layer with limited micro-cracks beneath the planar joint surface. In comparison, the thickness of the damage zone for the rough joints is about an order of magnitude larger than that of the planar joints, and the coalesced micro-cracks are generally inclined to the shear direction with acute angles. The findings obtained in this study contribute to a better understanding on the frictional behavior and damage characteristics of rock joints or fractures with different roughness. 展开更多

This paper focuses on the evolution processes of different types of rockbursts occurring in deep tunnels. A series of laboratory tests and in-situ monitoring in deep tunnels excavated by tunnel boring machine (TBM) and drill-and-blast (D&B) method have been conducted to understand the mechanisms and processes of the evolution of different types of rockbursts, including strain rockburst, strain-structure slip rockburst, immediate rockburst and time-delayed rockburst. Three different risk assessment methods are proposed to evaluate the intensity and potential failure depth of rockbursts. These methods can be applied before excavation and the results can be updated according to the real-time information during excavation. Two micro-seismicity based real-time warning systems have been established for predicting various intensities ofrockbursts, such as slight, moderate, intensive and extremely intensive rockbursts. Meanwhile, the probability and intensity of the rockburst are also given. The strategy for excavation and support design has been suggested for various intensities of rockbursts before excavation. The strategy for dynamic control of the rockburst evolution process is also proposed according to the monitoring results. The methodology has been successfully applied to rockburst risk reduction for deep tunnels at Jinping II hydropower project. The results have illustrated the applicability of the proposed methodology and techniques concerning rockbursts. 展开更多

Cryptocrystalline basalt is one of the two major types of rocks exposed in the super large-scale underground powerhouse in Baihetan hydropower station in China. The rock of this type shows various sitespecific mechanical responses(e.g.fragmentation,fracturing,and relaxation)during excavation.Using conventional triaxial testing facility MTS 815.03,we obtained the stressestrain curves, macroscopic failure characteristics, and strength characteristics of cryptocrystalline basalt. On this basis, evolution of crack initiation and propagation was explored using the finite-discrete element method(FDEM)to understand the failure mechanism of cryptocrystalline basalt. The test results showed that:(1)under different confining stresses, almost all the pre-peak stressestrain curves of cryptocrystalline basalt were linear and the post-peak stresses decreased rapidly;(2)the cryptocrystalline basalt showed a failure mode in a form of fragmentation under low and medium confining stresses while fragmentation-shear coupling failure dominated at high confining stresses;and(3)the initial strength ratio(sci/sf,where sci and sf are the crack initiation strength and peak strength, respectively)ranged from 0.45 to 0.55 and the damage strength ratio(scd/sf,where scd is the crack damage strength)exceeded 0.9.The stressestrain curve characteristics and failure modes of cryptocrystalline basalt could be reflected numerically. For this,FDEM simulation was employed to reveal the characteristics of cryptocrystalline basalt, including high scd/sf values and rapid failure after scd, with respect to the microscopic characteristics of mineral structures. The results showed that the fragmentation characteristics of cryptocrystalline basalt were closely related to the development of tensile cracks in rock samples prior to failure. Moreover, the decrease in degree of fragmentation with increasing confining stress was also correlated with the dominant effect of confining stress on the tensile cracks. 展开更多

Shearing behavior and failure mechanism of bolt-grout interface are of great significance for load transfer capacity and design of rock bolting system. In this paper, direct shear tests on bolt-grout interfaces under constant normal load(CNL) conditions were conducted to investigate the effects of bolt profile(i.e.rib spacing and rib height) and grout mixture on the bolt-grout interface in terms of mechanical behaviors and failure modes.Test results showed that the peak shear strength and the deformation capacity of the bolt-grout interface are highly dependent on the bolt profile and grout mixture, suggesting that bolt performances can be optimized, which were unfortunately ignored in the previous studies.A new interface failure mode,i.e.'sheared-crush' mode, was proposed, which was characterized by progressive crush failure of the grout asperities between steel ribs during shearing. It was shown that the interface failure mode mainly depends on the normal stress level and rib spacing, compared with the rib height and grout mixture for the range of tested parameters in this study. 展开更多

Fault activation has been the focus of research community for years. However, the studies of fault activation remain immature, such as the fault activation mode and its major factors under constant normal stiffness(CNS)conditions associated with large thickness of fault surrounding rock mass.In this study, the rock friction experiments were conducted to understand the fault activation modes under the CNS conditions. Two major parameters,i.e.the initial normal stress and loading rate, were considered and calibrated in the tests. To reveal the response mechanism of fault activation, the local strains near the fault plane were recorded, and the macroscopic stresses and displacements were analyzed. The testing results show that the effect of displacement-controlled loading rate is more pronounced under the CNS conditions than that under constant normal load(CNL)conditions. Both the normal and shear stresses drop suddenly when the stick-slip occurs. The decrease and increase of the normal stress are synchronous with the shear stress in the regular stick-slip scenario, but mismatch with the shear stress during the chaotic stick-slip process. The results are helpful for understanding the fault sliding mode and the prediction and prevention of fault slip. 展开更多

Rock bolts have been widely used for stabilizing rock mass in geotechnical engineering. It is acknowledged that the bolt profiles have a sound influence on the support effect of the rock bolting system.Previous studies have proposed some optimal rib parameters(e.g.rib spacing);unfortunately, the interface shear behaviors are generally ignored. Therefore, determination of radial stress and radial displacement on the bolt-grout interface using traditional pull-out tests is not possible. The load-bearing capacity and deformation capacity vary as bolt profiles differ, suggesting that the support effect of the bolting system can be enhanced by optimizing bolt profiles. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of bolt profiles(with/without ribs, rib spacing, and rib height)on the shear behaviors between the rock bolt and grout material using direct shear tests.Thereby, systematic interfacial shear tests with different bolt profiles were performed under both constant normal load(CNL)and constant normal stiffness(CNS)boundary conditions. The results suggested that rib spacing has a more marked influence on the interface shear behavior than rib height does,in particular at the post-yield stage. The results could facilitate our understanding of bolt-grout interface shear behavior under CNS conditions, and optimize selection of rock bolts under in situ rock conditions. 展开更多

Due to the weakness in mechanical properties of chlorite schist and the high in situ stress in Jinping II hydropower station, the rock mass surrounding the diversion tunnels located in chlorite schist was observed with extremely large deformations. This may significantly increase the risk of tunnel instability during excavation. In order to assess the stability of the diversion tunnels laboratory tests were carried out in association with the petrophysical properties, mechanical behaviors and waterlweakening properties of chlorite schist. The continuous deformation of surrounding rock mass, the destruction of the support structure and a large-scale collapse induced by the weak chlorite schist and high in situ stress were analyzed. The distributions of compressive deformation in the excavation zone with large deformations were also studied. In this regard, two reinforcement schemes for the excavation of diversion tunnel bottom section were proposed accordingly. This study could offer theoretical basis for deed tunnel construction in similar geological condition~ 展开更多

Due to the complex diagenesis process, basalt usually contains defects in the form of amygdales formed by diagenetic bubbles, which affect its mechanical properties. In this study,a synthetic rock mass method(SRM)based on the combination of discrete fracture network(DFN)and finite-discrete element method(FDEM)is applied to characterizing the amygdaloidal basalt, and to systematically exploring the effects of the development characteristics of amygdales and sample sizes on the mechanical properties of basalt. The results show that with increasing amygdale content, the elastic modulus(E)increases linearly, while the uniaxial compressive strength(UCS)shows an exponential or logarithmic decay. When the orientation of amygdales is between 0°and 90°,basalt shows a relatively pronounced strength and stiffness anisotropy.Based on the analysis of the geometric and mechanical properties, the representative element volume(REV)size of amygdaloidal basalt blocks is determined to be 200 mm,and the mechanical properties obtained on this scale can be regarded as the properties of the equivalent continuum. The results of this research are of value to the understanding of the mechanical properties of amygdaloidal basalt,so as to guide the formulation of engineering design schemes more accurately. 展开更多

The shear behavior of large-scale weak intercalation shear zones(WISZs)often governs the stability of foundations, rock slopes, and underground structures. However, due to their wide distribution, undulating morphology, complex fabrics, and varying degrees of contact states, characterizing the shear behavior of natural and complex large-scale WISZs precisely is challenging. This study proposes an analytical method to address this issue, based on geological fieldwork and relevant experimental results. The analytical method utilizes the random field theory and Kriging interpolation technique to simplify the spatial uncertainties of the structural and fabric features for WISZs into the spatial correlation and variability of their mechanical parameters. The Kriging conditional random field of the friction angle of WISZs is embedded in the discrete element software 3DEC,enabling activation analysis of WISZ C2 in the underground caverns of the Baihetan hydropower station. The results indicate that the activation scope of WISZ C2 induced by the excavation of underground caverns is approximately 0.5e1 times the main powerhouse span, showing local activation.Furthermore, the overall safety factor of WISZ C2 follows a normal distribution with an average value of 3.697. 展开更多

Natural fractures are generally well developed in most hydrocarbon and geothermal reservoirs, which can produce complex fracture networks due to the activation of fractures during hydraulic stimulation. The present paper is devoted to developing a method to investigate the activation characteristics of fracture under injection-shearing coupled condition at laboratory scale. The fluid is injected into the single-fractured granite until the fracture is activated based on the triaxial direct shear tests. The results show that injection process can significantly influence the shear stress distribution field, resulting in release of shear stress and relative slip between the opposite sides of the fractured surface. The injectioninduced activation of fracture is strongly dependent on the stress states. When the normal stress increases, the injection-induced activation pressure increases, and the comparatively high normal stress can restrain the fracture activation. The fracture deformation mechanisms during fluid injection are also discussed preliminarily with the experimental data. The sensitivity of shear stress to fluid injection increases with increase of shear stress level, while it decreases under high normal stress. The results can facilitate our understanding of the natural fracture activation behavior during fluid pressure stimulation. 展开更多

The damage and even failure of hard brittle rocks has been the most important challenge facing the safety of construction of deep engineering works,so the key to solving this problem is the recognition of the strength characteristics and description of the mechanical behavior of hard brittle rocks. Therefore,in view of this problem,in this study,we first analyzed the strength and mechanical response characteristics revealed in tests of,and site excavation in,hard brittle rocks.Second,by analyzing rock-strength envelopes on meridional and deviatoric planes, the generalized polyaxial strain energy(GPSE)strength criterion was applied. This allows description of the effects of the minimum principal stress, intermediate principal stress, hydrostatic pressure, and Lode’s angle of stress on the strength of hard rocks.By establishing evolutionary relationships of strength parameters and dilation parameters with plastic volumetric strain in rock failure,we established an elasto-plastic mechanical constitutive model for hard brittle rocks based on the GPSE criterion. In addition, through use of the failure approach index theory and the dilatancy safety factor,an evaluation index for degree of damage considering dilatant effects of rocks was proposed. Finally, the constitutive model established in this study and the proposed evaluation index were integrated into the numerical simulation method to simulate triaxial tests on rocks and numerical simulation of deformation and fracture of the rocks surrounding the deep-buried auxiliary tunnels in China’s Jinping II Hydropower Station. In this way,the reasonableness of the model and the index was verified. The strength theory and the constitutive model established in this research are applicable to the analysis of high-stress deformation and fracture of hard brittle rock masses, which supports the theoretical work related to deep engineering operations. 展开更多
