The current study examined the effects of band therapy using music on grasping power, depression, and personal relationships among residents of a nursing home. Thirty subjects participated in the study. The band therapy included greetings, warm-up exercises with music, singing with dance, playing instruments, closing speech, and stretching with background music. Band therapy was held for 40 minutes once per week, for a total of four sessions, in the activity room of the nursing home. Findings showed that grasping power, depression, and personal relationships were improved at posttest, but the differences were not statistically significant. A better study design to compare the effects of band therapy with the other group, and a more simple and repeated intervention for the elderly to follow without stress might be necessary. 展开更多

Purpose: The purpose of this study was the comparative effects on fatigue and sleep of aroma hand massage vs. hand massage among hospice patients in a hospital. Methods: The design of this study was a nonequivalent comparison group pretest-posttest design. This study was performed from May to December 2012 in a hospice ward. A total of 30 hospice patients in a hospice ward participated in the study (17 in an aroma massage group and 13 in a massage group). The Piper Fatigue Scale was used to measure the fatigue level. The quantity of sleep was measured using sleep hours and the quality of sleep using the Verran & Snyder-Halpern sleep scale (1987). The aroma massage group used 1:1 lavender and bergamot diluted to 1% with 100 ml jojoba carrier oil. The massage group used carrier oil without an essential oil. Each treatment was performed for 10 minutes prior to the subject’s sleeping time, once a day and for 5 days. Data were analyzed using t-test, x2-test, Fisher’s exact test and the repeated measures ANOVA with the SPSS program. Results: The increase in the fatigue and decrease in the sleep quantity were lower in the aroma hand massage compared to the only hand massage but they were not statistically significant. Conclusion: The quality of sleeping improved in the aroma hand massage group compared to the control group even though it was not significant. For the further studies, assessing and respecting the patient’s aroma preference were important considerations when providing aromatherapy and the appropriation of using 1% essential oil to dilute needs to be tested for the hospice patients in the further studies 展开更多

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the hospice care compliance of nurses working at a hospice ward and provide meaningful data to improve the hospice care compliances. Methods: Participants included 104 nurses working at the hospice ward of the hospital located at P and D cities. Data was collected from February to March 2012. The level of hospice care compliance was measured using Bae (2000)’s questionnaires. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA and Scheffè test using SPSS/WIN 18.0 program. Results: The level of hospice care compliance in hospice nurses working at a hospice ward was high (3.25 out of 4). In hospice care compliance, the physical area was highest, followed by the emotional, spiritual, and social areas. Hospice care compliance was significantly different according to age, marital status, education, religion, importance of religion, job position, job satisfaction and life satisfaction. Hospice care compliance was also significantly different according to the nurses’ experience of death, having license or certification related to hospice care and experiences related to clients’ death. Conclusions: The findings of this study showed that the level of hospice care compliance was high and the hospice care compliance in South Korea was primarily focused on physical care. Considering that spiritual needs are important needs in hospice clients, hospice nurses need to focus on those aspects more. To improve the quality of hospice care compliance in the hospice nurses, programs to increase hospice nurses’ job and life satisfaction are needed. 展开更多

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to test the effect of individualized music on agitation for homedwelling patients with dementia. Method: One group pre-post test was used for research design and a total of 26 subjects participated in this study. Individualized music intervention was subjects’ listening to their preferred music for 30 minutes prior to peak agitation time twice a week for a total of four sessions. The subject’s agitation levels were measured for three different points: thirty minutes prior to listening to music, 30 minutes while listening to the music, and after listening to the music throughout the 4 sessions. To measure the agitation level, the modified CohenMansfield Agitation Inventory was used. A Paired ttest was used for data analysis. Results: Most subjects were female (73.1%), Caucasian (92.4%), Protestant (50%), and independent activity (53.8%). The mean of the subjects’ MMSE scores was 8.08 (8.17). The most favorite music types included country/western music (31.0%), religious music (26.9%), and big band (26.9%). Agitation level decreased while listening to the music compared to the baseline (t = 3.70, p < .001). Conclusion: The findings of this study would provide meaningful data to develop an individualized music intervention protocol to control agitation for homedwelling patients with dementia. 展开更多

The purpose of this study using secondary data analysis was to identify factors affecting verbal agitation in patients with dementia staying at nursing home. This study is a secondary analysis of an existing original quantitative data set (n = 193). A total of 166 subjects’ data were included in this current study after 27 subjects’ data were excluded from the original data because they did not appear verbal agitation. Multiple regression analyses identified hallucination (β = 0.27), total number of physiologic discomforts (β = 0.19) and pain (β = 0.17) as significant predictors of verbal agitation and these factors explained 27.8% of the variance in the model. The findings of this study showed that hallucination, total number of physiologic discomforts and pain with dementia need to be considered when intervention programs to control verbal agitation in patients with dementia were developed. 展开更多

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the contents of music intervention studies between the music therapists and non-music therapists who endeavored to control agitation in patients with dementia, and to provide meaningful ideas to improve the music interventions by music providers. Method: This study is a review study by searching CINAHL, MEDLINE, and PsychINFO for the keywords, “agitation” and “music,” which are used in the searches. Results: A total of 30 studies of music intervention (7 studies about music therapists and 23 studies about non-music therapists) were included for the review. The studies about music therapists had a more reasonable sample size, variety of music activities, and comparison groups. The studies of non-music therapists were provided by nurses, researchers, recreational therapists, and trained nursing assistants and they provided music using background music at a scheduled time for care, such as mealtimes and bathing times. Conclusions: Studies on music interventions need to have a more rigorous research design, such as randomized controlled trials for the future studies. Furthermore, there is a need for multi-disciplinary music intervention studies by music providers who have different types of educational backgrounds and clinical experiences. 展开更多
