A variety of coal room and pillar mining methods have been efficiently practiced at depths of up to 500 m with least strata mechanics issues. However, for the first time, this method was trialled at depths of 850 e900 m in CSM mine of Czech Republic. The rhomboid-shaped coal pillars with acute corners of 70,surrounded with 5.2 m wide and 3.5e4.5 m high mine roadways, were used.Pillars were developed in a staggered manner with their size variation in the Panel II from 83 m×25 m to 24 m×20 m(corner to corner)and Panel V from 35 m×30 m to 26 m×16 m.Coal seam inclined at 12was affected by the unusual slippery slickenside roof bands and sometimes in the floor levels with high vertical stress below strong and massive sandstone roof.In order to ensure safety, pillars in both the panels were continuously monitored using various geotechnical instruments measuring the induced stresses, side spalling and roof sagging. Both panels suffered high amounts of mining induced stress and pillar failure with side-spalling up to 5 m from all sides.Heavy fracturing of coal pillar sides was controlled by fully encapsulated steel bolts.Mining induced stress kept increasing with the progress of development of pillars and galleries.Instruments installed in the pillar failed to monitor actual induced stress due to fracturing of coal mass around it which created an apprehension of pillar failure up to its core due to high vertical mining induced stress. This risk was reduced by carrying out scientific studies including the three-dimensional numerical models calibrated with data from the instrumented pillar. An attempt has been made to study the behavior of coal pillars and their yielding characteristics at deeper cover based on field and simulation results. 展开更多

Twenty-seven specimens were tested to investigate the uniaxial compression behaviour of an innovative standing support for underground space applications. The innovative standing support consisted of an external fibre reinforced polymer(FRP)jacket and the infill column made of cementitious grout, tailings and coal wash rejects.Effects of the FRP layers number and water to the cementitious grout(w/g)ratio were evaluated.Test results indicated that lower w/g ratios produced stronger infill columns. With FRP confinement, the standing support demonstrated strain-hardening loading characteristics with a significant improvement in both strength and ductility. The highest strength and strain of the specimens achieved was 58.4 MPa and 11.8%respectively.Compared with the unconfined specimens, the confinement with four FRP layers increased the specimen strength and associated strain up to 3.6 and 27.0 times respectively.A correlation between the compressive strength of the infill material and the ultrasonic pulse velocity was also investigated.Furthermore,a simple design-oriented model was proposed to predict the peak strength and the corresponding strain of the innovative standing support. 展开更多

The prediction of gas emissions arising from underground coal mining has been the subject of extensive research for several decades, however calculation techniques remain empirically based and are hence limited to the origin of calculation in both application and resolution. Quantification and management of risk associated with sudden gas release during mining(outbursts) and accumulation of noxious or combustible gases within the mining environment is reliant on such predictions, and unexplained variation correctly requires conservative management practices in response to risk. Over 2500 gas core samples from two southern Sydney basin mines producing metallurgical coal from the Bulli seam have been analysed in various geospatial context including relationships to hydrological features and geological structures. The results suggest variability and limitations associated with the present traditional approaches to gas emission prediction and design of gas management practices may be addressed using predictions derived from improved spatial datasets, and analysis techniques incorporating fundamental physical and energy related principles. 展开更多

Advanced microfluidic technology was used to examine the microscopic viscous and inertial effects evolution of water flow in rock joints. The influence of void space on fluid flow behaviour in rock joints under different flow velocities was experimentally investigated at the micro scale. Using advanced fabrication technology of microfluidic device, micro flow channels of semicircular, triangular, rectangular and pentagonal cavities were fabricated to simulate different void space of rock joints, respectively. Using the fluorescence labelling approach, the trajectory of water flow was captured by the microscope digital camera when it passed over the cavity under different flow velocities. The flow tests show that the flow trajectory deviated towards the inside of the cavity at low flow velocities. With the increase in flow velocity, this degree of flow trajectory deviation decreased until there was no trajectory deviation for flow in the straight parallel channel. The flow trajectory deviation initially reduced from the void corner near the entrance. At the same time, a small eddy appeared near the void corner of the entrance. The size and intensity of the eddy increased with the flow velocity until it occupied the whole cavity domain. The gradual reduction of flow trajectory near the straight parallel channel and the growth of eddy inside the cavity reflect the evolution of microscopic viscous and inertial forces under different flow velocities. The eddy formed inside the cavity does not contribute to the total flow flux, but the running of the eddy consumes flow energy. This amount of pressure loss due to voids could contribute to the nonlinear deviation of fracture fluid flow from Darcy's law. This study contributes to the fundamental understanding of non-Darcy's flow occurrence in rock joints at the micro scale. 展开更多

Rock bolting has advanced rapidly during the past 4 decades due to a better understanding of load transfer mechanisms and advances made in the bolt system technology. Bolts are used as permanent and temporary support systems in tunnelling and mining operations. A review of has indicated that three systems of reinforcement devices have evolved as part of rock bolt and ground anchor while the rock is not generally thought of as being a component of the reinforcement system. A classification of rock bolting reinforcement systems is presented, followed by the fundamental theory of the load transfer mechanism. The failure mode of two phases of rock bolting system is formularised. The failure modes of cable bolting are discussed using a bond strength model as well as an iterative method. Finally, the interfacial shear stress model for ribbed bar is introduced and a closed form solution is obtained using a tri-line stress strain relationship. 展开更多

A study to estimate land surface movement caused by large surface excavations in sedimentary strata is presented. In stratified or jointed strata the stress relief driven movement adjacent to large excavations can be significantly larger than expected.High lateral stresses measured in Australia and other places around the world indicate that the ratio of horizontal to vertical stress has been particularly high at shallow depths. The in situ strata is in compression and during excavation, stress is relieved towards the opening causing strata movement.Large excavations such as,open cut mines or highway cuttings, can initiate an extensive horizontal slide of surface layers towards the excavation. These ground movements can be damaging to surface structures such as water storage dams and large buildings.Based on stress measurements at shallow depths in Australian coal mines the study presented here calculates and models the extent of potential ground movement along the bedding surface adjacent to large excavations and provides a new prediction tool of land movement at the excavation boundary that can benefit the geotechnical practitioners in the mining industry. 展开更多

Carbon dioxide (CO2) enhanced coalbed methane (ECBM) is an effective method to im- prove methane (CH4) production and this technology has already been used to increase gas production in several field trials worldwide. One major problem is the injection drop in the later period due to permeability decrease caused by coal matrix swelling induced by CO2 injection. In order to quantify the swelling effect, in this work, coal samples were collected from the Bulli coal seam, Sydney Basin and adsorption tests with simultaneous matrix swelling measurement were conducted. The adsorption and swelling characteristics were analyzed by measuring the adsorption mass simultaneously with the strain measurement. Then experiments were conducted to replicate the ECBM process using the indi- rect gravity method to obtain the swelfing strain change with CO2 injection. The results show that the coal adsorption capacity in CO2 is almost two times greater than that in CH4, and nitrogen adsorption is the least among these gases. A Langmuir-fike model can be used to describe the strain with the gas pressure and the swelling strain induced by gas adsorption has a Hnear relationship with gas adsorp- tion quantity. Moreover, swelling strain increase was observed when CO2 was injected into the sample cell and the swelling strain was almost the sum of the strains induced by different gases at correspond- ing partial gas pressure. 展开更多
