Brood parasitic birds lay eggs in the nests of other birds,and the parasitized hosts can reduce the cost of raising unrelated offspring through the recognition of parasitic eggs.Hosts can adopt vision-based cognitive ...Brood parasitic birds lay eggs in the nests of other birds,and the parasitized hosts can reduce the cost of raising unrelated offspring through the recognition of parasitic eggs.Hosts can adopt vision-based cognitive mechanisms to recognize foreign eggs by comparing the colors of foreign and host eggs.However,there is currently no uniform conclusion as to whether this comparison involves the single or multiple threshold decision rules.In this study,we tested both hypotheses by adding model eggs of different colors to the nests of Barn Swallows(Hirundo rustica)of two geographical populations breeding in Hainan and Heilongjiang Provinces in China.Results showed that Barn Swallows rejected more white model eggs(moderate mimetic to their own eggs)and blue model eggs(highly non-mimetic eggs with shorter reflectance spectrum)than red model eggs(highly nonmimetic eggs with longer reflectance spectrum).There was no difference in the rejection rate of model eggs between the two populations of Barn Swallows,and clutch size was not a factor affecting egg recognition.Our results are consistent with the single rejection threshold model.This study provides strong experimental evidence that the color of model eggs can has an important effect on egg recognition in Barn Swallows,opening up new avenues to uncover the evolution of cuckoo egg mimicry and explore the cognitive mechanisms underlying the visual recognition of foreign eggs by hosts.展开更多
Diffusion-ordered nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy(DOSY),dubbed chromato-graphic NMR spectroscopy,can be used to simultaneously distinguish and identify the structures of components in a mixture according to th...Diffusion-ordered nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy(DOSY),dubbed chromato-graphic NMR spectroscopy,can be used to simultaneously distinguish and identify the structures of components in a mixture according to their different diffusion coefficients.In order to improve the resolution of DOSY on the diffusion dimension,a lot of matrices have been developed to expand the application of this technique in mixture analysis.However,there is no matrix to detect the mixture of ionic liquids(ILs).Herein,we introduced a new matrix,poly(sodium-p-styrenesulfonate)(PSSNa),which can be used to fully separate the signals of a mixture of different ILs.The mixture of three imidazolium ILs of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide,1-allyl-3-vinylimidazolium bromide and 1-arboxymethy-3-methylimidazolium chloride could be fully distinguished by virtue of their different interactions with PSSNa.We also investigated the influences of PSSNa amount,IL con-centration and solution pH value on the signal resolution of mixtures.This work provides a scientific reference for the analysis of the other IL analytes.展开更多
The Silurian palaeontology and stratigraphy of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau have been studied for more than100 years.With the launch of the Second Tibetan Plateau Scientific Expedition and Research,it is necessary to u...The Silurian palaeontology and stratigraphy of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau have been studied for more than100 years.With the launch of the Second Tibetan Plateau Scientific Expedition and Research,it is necessary to update the summaries of the Silurian stratigraphy and fossil assemblages of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and their correlation with its surrounding areas.In this study,we have selected 33 sections from the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and its surroundings areas,summarised the available data in terms of stratigraphic regionalisation,lithostratigraphy,chronostratigraphy,and biostratigraphy,and divided the study area into four stratigraphic provinces:the Xizang-Western Yunnan-Western Sichuan Province,the KunlunQilian Province,the South China Province,and the Tarim Province.In general,the Silurian strata in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau is more complete than those in other areas of China.Palaeobiogeographical studies of the vertebrate faunas,sporomorph assemblages,and brachiopod faunas of the study area indicate a closer geographical relationship between the South China,Tarim,and Indochina palaeoplates,than previously considered.Compared with the surrounding areas where Silurian strata have been extensively studied,the study of Silurian strata in the main part of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau is still in the preliminary stage.In the future,it is necessary to conduct research on the age,distribution,and resource potential of basal Silurian black shales to provide new directions for shale gas exploration and development in China.The shallow marine strata of the middle to upper Silurian require further subdivision.Considering that the Silurian System in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau is more complete,it has the potential to supplement and improve the study of the carbon isotope stratigraphy of the Silurian in China.展开更多
