Human beings are the mainstay and the ultimate goal of civilization. The history of human civilization is a continuous struggle to realize the respect, liberation, protection, and development of humanity.Human rights are an achievement of humanity and a symbol of progress, and the human rights civilization is an important component of human civilization.Understanding and interpreting human rights from the perspective of human rights civilization means that human rights are not only a concept or an idea but also a grand historical and long-term social practice.Up to now,the development of human rights civilization has roughly experienced four awakening eras:initialization, revolution, popularization, and globalization. In terms of its value dimensions,it has the characteristics of progressiveness, diversity, commonality, inclusiveness, indivisibility, openness, and so on.The historical position of human rights civilization and the development of its value dimensions have shown to the world that human rights are the common wealth of humanity, and human rights belong to all mankind;human rights are historical, concrete, and developmental;the concept of human rights is constantly evolving, and its connotations and categories are constantly expanding;achieving the free and well-rounded development of every person is the highest value realm of human rights civilization. The Chinese modernization endows Chinese civilization with modern strength and opens up new horizons for human rights civilization. The new pattern of human rights civilization to be created by Chinese modernization not only possesses the common characteristics of human rights civilization but also enjoys Chinese characteristics based on its own national conditions, enriching and developing the diversity of human rights civilization for all mankind. 展开更多

Within the international human rights circle,Abduliahi AhmedAn-Na’im is regarded as a representative of Southern voices."Under such a circumstance that the confrontation between the West and non-Western countries on human rights has become a routine reality,An-Na’im advocates a contingent universality of human rights or"contingent universality of human rights,"and insists that the universality of human rights be based on the cultural legitimacy of human rights. While he sees the internal dialogue of human rights in all non-Western countries, including Islamic ones,as a basic way to ensure the international human rights standards be accepted gradually,he also believes the cross-cultural dialogue among different societies can eventually lead to the reconstruction of the legitimacy of international human rights standards or even the standards themselves.An-Na’im’s theory of moderate cultural relativism points a way to achieve universality of human rights for developing countries, but there are a few questions that need to be further addressed. 展开更多

Dignity and Human Rights are recognized as two principles that coordinate with each other. However,it is an invention of modern people to set dignity as the basis of human rights from a genealogical point of view.In the classical context, dignity was represented as a political value, honoring excellence in public service. As a reward and return for political services, dignity holders were entitled to be recognized by the state and treated with appropriate courtesy and respect. There are two ways to get dignity,"bestowed in advance"and"awarded afterwards."The former was bestowed by a noble bloodline, while the latter was a reward for eminent military achievements or outstanding performance in normal state governance. In any case, dignity is defined in a differential pattern. It is quite different from the value of Equality for All in dignity, which is emphasized in modern society. In ancient Rome,as a tribute to moral excellence, dignity also required the taming and control ofphysical desire,so the value of dignity did not honor the natural rights of each human being, but rather the high rank and strong obligation of the excellent. 展开更多

The practice of human rights in contemporary China puts forward an urgent demand for the innovation in human rights theories. On the basis of summarizing the practice of human rights in contemporary China, the developmental theory of human rights holds that human rights are the value consensus and social norms fostered by the common crisis faced by all human beings under the background of globalization of market economy. The free, comprehensive and harmonious development of all people is the ultimate goal of human rights.Taking the right to human development"as a purposive right can provide more enlightening explanations for the relational structure of human rights. 展开更多
