Drought was imposed in hydroponic culture with polyethylene glycol 6000 (PEG6000) that was initially standardized with different concentrations. All the rice varieties showed apparent decreases in growth characteristics under drought stress (initially at 15% for 7 d followed by 20% PEG6000 for 7 d in Yoshida medium). On the basis of standard evaluation score (SES), eight rice varieties showed high drought tolerance which were carried forward for further biochemical analyses. Based on different morpho- physiological parameters, SN03 (Bora), SN04 (Prosad Bhog), SN05 (Kola Joha), SN06 (Helash Bora), SN08 (Salihoi Bao), SN12 (Kola Amona), SN20 (Ronga Bora) and SN21 (Sok-Bonglong) were identified as promising drought tolerant varieties. The non-enzymatic antioxidants activities viz., glutathione, ascorbate and enzymatic antioxidant activities such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), guaiacol peroxidase (GPX), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), glutathione reductase (GR) in shoots and roots of all the selected varieties revealed significant level of protection mechanisms as compared with controls. Enhancement in activities of the overall antioxidant enzymes including SOD, GPX, CAT, GR and APX under drought stress reflects their role in the adaptation process under water stress.展开更多

METHODS:Consecutive non-treated dyspeptic patients undergoing diagnostic endoscopy were tested for H pylori infection by culture, rapid urease test, and histology of gastric biopsy specimens. Serum from 61 H pylori infected and 21 non-infected patients were tested for anti-H pylori IgG antibodies by commercial ELISA (AccuBindTM ELISA, Monobind, USA), ICT (Assure H pylori Rapid Test, Genelabs Diagnostics, Singapore), and immunoblot (Helico Blot 2.1, Genelabs Diagnostics, Singapore) assays. ICT and immunoblot kits cover CIM among other parameters and their performance with and without CIM was evaluated separately. RESULTS:Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), and accuracy of ELISA were 96.7%, 42.8%, 83.1%, 81.8%, and 82.9%, of ICT were 90.1%, 80.9%, 93.2%, 73.9%, and 87.8%, of ICT with CIM were 88.5%, 90.4%, 96.4%, 73.0%, and 89.0%, of immunoblot were 98.3%, 80.9%, 93.7%, 94.4%, and 93.9%, and of immunoblot with CIM were 98.3%, 90.4%, 96.7%, 95.0%, and 96.3%, respectively. CONCLUSION:Immunoblot with CIM had the best performance. ICT with CIM was found to be more specific and accurate than the conventional ELISA and may be useful for non-invasive diagnosis of H pylori infection.展开更多

Among the 15-isolates characterized previously, the strains F-1, F-3 and F-10 represented Staphylococcus, Bacillus and Acetobacter spp., respectively. After checking various parameters for growth, acetic acid production rate was optimized further. Among the 3-starins analyzed here, the strain F-10 gave maximum acetic acid (7.0 g/100 ml) at 37°C in 2% ethanol concentration. The strain F-10 is capable of producing high yield of acetic acid at relatively high temperature, which is an ideal condition for vinegar production, which may reduce the water cooling expenses as well as the risk of contamination.展开更多

ZigBee (IEEE 802.15.4) is such a digital wireless technology that is used for personal area networks. In this paper, an office automation network using the combination of fixed and mobile IEEE 802.15.4 has been deployed and analyzed. The QoS parameters of the network as the performance metrics like throughput, MAC delay and data dropped rate have been investigated. Finally the network has been finalized with the optimized QoS parameters.展开更多

Cholera is still one of the major health concerns in developing countries like Bangladesh due to poor sanitation and unavailability of safe drinking water. This experiment was confronted to identify V. cholerae O1 from stool samples as well as to determine the antibiotic susceptibility pattern of the isolated strains. A total of 140 stool samples from people infected with diarrheal disease were collected from July 2016 to December 2016. Among all, 58 samples were found positive for V. cholerae which were further subjected to sero-grouping by specific anti-sera and antimicrobial sus-ceptibility test by Kirby Bauer disc diffusion method. The zones of inhibition were measured and interpreted by following the recommendations of the criteria of Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI). It was found that 43 (74.1%) isolates of V. cholerae were O1 serogroup of Ogawa serotype and the rest 15 (25.9%) were O1 serogroup of Inaba serotype. People aged between 41 - 50 were most susceptible to V. cholerae O1 having about 39.7% of positive cases. The isolates were highly susceptible to Ciprofloxacin and Gentamicin with 100% susceptibility whereas 100% resistant was found towards Nalidixic acid. Though most of the isolates in our study were susceptible against tested antibiotics, the continuous surveillance is required to see the changing pattern of serogroups or serotypes and antimicrobial profile in this region.展开更多
