Brown lesions randomly distributed on leaf blades were observed about 3 wk after sowing. The symptom lasted for the whole plant growth duration. Histochemical analysis indicated that cell death occurred in and around the site of necrotic lesions accompanied with accumulation of hydrogen hyperoxide. Agronomic traits were largely similar to the wild type IR64 except seed setting rate and 1 000-grain weight which were significantly decreased in the mutant. Disease resistance of the mutant to multiple races of Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae was significantly enhanced. Genetic analysis showed that the mutation was controlled by a single recessive gene, tentatively termed splHM143. In addition, using molecular markers and 1023 mutant type individuals from an F2 segregating population derived from the cross HM143/R9308, the spotted-leaf gene was finally delimited to an interval of 149 kb between markers XX25 and ID40 on the long arm of chromosome 4. splHM143 is likely a novel rice spotted-leaf gene since no other similar genes have been identified near the chromosomal region.展开更多

The mutant was characterized as prostrate growth at the beginn...A gravitropism-deficient mutant M96 was isolated from a mutant bank, generated by ethyl methane sulfonate(EMS) mutagenesis of indica rice accession ZJ100. The mutant was characterized as prostrate growth at the beginning of germination, and the prostrate growth phenotype ran through the whole life duration. Tiller angle and tiller number of M96 increased significantly in comparison with the wild type. Tissue section observation analysis indicated that asymmetric stem growth around the second node occurred in M96. Genetic analysis and gene mapping showed that M96 was controlled by a single recessive nuclear gene, tentatively termed as gravitropism-deficient M96(gd M96), which was mapped to a region of 506 kb flanked by markers RM5960 and In Del8 on the long arm of chromosome 11. Sequencing analysis of the open reading frames in this region revealed a nucleotide substitution from G to T in the third exon of LOC_Os11g29840. Additionally, real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR analysis showed that the expression level of LOC_Os11g29840 in the stems was much higher than in the roots and leaves in M96. Furthermore, the expression level was more than four times in M96 stem than in the wild type stem. Our results suggested that the mutant gene was likely a new allele to the reported gene LAZY1. Isolation of this new allele would facilitate the further characterization of LAZY1.展开更多
Precipitation events spanning multiple days may have consequences different from those limited to a single day.In the present paper,the authors analyze circulation anomalies and precursory signals associated with long...Precipitation events spanning multiple days may have consequences different from those limited to a single day.In the present paper,the authors analyze circulation anomalies and precursory signals associated with long-duration(over 14 days) summer precipitation events over southern China.The results show that the over-14-day precipitation events are induced by an anomalous lowertropospheric(850-hPa) cyclone over the South China Sea(SCS) and southern China.The anomalous westerly winds to the south of the anomalous cyclone can be traced to north of New Guinea 30 days before.To the north of anomalous westerly winds,anomalous easterly winds appear later.The anomalous westerly and easterly winds form a cyclonic anomaly,moving northward and slightly westward during the following days and eventually controlling the SCS and southern China.The northward movement of anomalous westerly and easterly winds can also be found in the 30-60-day filtered wind field.This implies that the northward propagating 30-60-day intraseasonal oscillation from the equatorial western Pacific has an important contribution to over-14-day precipitation events over southern China.展开更多

In the present study, a rice brown hull 6(bh6) mutant was isolated from an ethane methyl sulfonate(EMS)-induced IR64 mutant bank. Brown pigments started to accumulate in bh6 rice hulls after heading and reached a higher level in mature seeds. Some major agronomic traits including panicle length and 1000-grain weight in bh6 were significantly lower than those in its corresponding wild type IR64, while other agronomic traits such as plant height, growth duration and seed-setting rate were largely similar between the two genotypes. The analysis of pigment content showed that the contents of total flavonoids and anthocyanin in bh6 hulls were significantly higher than those in IR64 hulls. Our results showed that the brown hull phenotype in bh6 was controlled by a single recessive gene which locates on the long arm of chromosome 9. Sequencing analysis detected a single base substitution(G/A) at position 1013 of the candidate gene(LOC_Os09g12150) encoding an F-box domain-containing protein(FBX310). Functional complementation experiment using the wild type allele can rescue the phenotype in bh6. Thus, we named this mutated gene as Os FBX310^(bh6), an allele of OsFBX310 functioning as an inhibitor of brown hull. The isolation of Os FBX310^(bh6) and its wild type allele can provide useful experimental materials and will facilitate the studies on revealing the mechanisms of flavonoid metabolism in monocot plants.展开更多
The spatiotemporal variations of water vapor budget(Bt)and their relationships with local precipitation over the Tibetan Plateau(TP)are critical for understanding the characteristics of spatial distributions and evolu...The spatiotemporal variations of water vapor budget(Bt)and their relationships with local precipitation over the Tibetan Plateau(TP)are critical for understanding the characteristics of spatial distributions and evolutions of water resources over the TP.Based on a boundary of the TP,this paper explored the spatiotemporal characteristics of Bt over the TP using the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts interim(ERA-Interim)reanalysis datasets.On the climatological mean,the TP is a water vapor sink throughout four seasons and the seasonal variation of Bt is closely associated with the water vapor budget at the southern boundary of the TP.The transient water vapor transport is quasimeridional in the mid-and high-latitude areas and plays a leading role in winter Bt but contributes little in other seasons.At the interannual timescale,the variation of Bt is mainly determined by anomalous water vapor transports at the western and southern boundaries.The Bay of Bengal,the North Arabian Sea,and mid-latitude West Asia are the main sources of excessive water vapor for a wetter TP.At the southern and western boundaries,the transient water vapor budget regulates one-third to four-fifths of Bt anomalies.Moreover,the variability of the TP Bt is closely associated with precipitation over the central-southern and southeastern parts of the TP in summer and winter,which is attributed to the combined effect of the stationary and transient water vapor budgets.Given the role of the transient water vapor transport,the linkage between the TP Bt and local precipitation is tighter.展开更多
