Temperature inversion enables superior stability for low-temperature Zn-ion batteries

It is challenging for aqueous Zn-ion batteries(ZIBs)to achieve comparable low-temperature(low-T)performance due to the easy-frozen electrolyte and severe Zn dendrites.Herein,an aqueous electrolyte with a low freezing point and high ionic conductivity is proposed.Combined with molecular dynamics simulation and multi-scale interface analysis(time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry threedimensional mapping and in-situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy method),the temperature independence of the V_(2)O_(5)cathode and Zn anode is observed to be opposite.Surprisingly,dominated by the solvent structure of the designed electrolyte at low temperatures,vanadium dissolution/shuttle is significantly inhibited,and the zinc dendrites caused by this electrochemical crosstalk are greatly relieved,thus showing an abnormal temperature inversion effect.Through the disclosure and improvement of the above phenomena,the designed Zn||V_(2)O_(5)full cell delivers superior low-T performance,maintaining almost 99%capacity retention after 9500 cycles(working more than 2500 h)at-20°C.This work proposes a kind of electrolyte suitable for low-T ZIBs and reveals the inverse temperature dependence of the Zn anode,which might offer a novel perspective for the investigation of low-T aqueous battery systems. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Clear cell renal cell carcinoma(ccRCC)is a common type of tumor that can metastasize to any organs and sites.However,it is extremely rare for ccRCC to metastasize to the iris.Here,we describe a rare case of iris metastasis from ccRCC with a history of left nephrectomy in 2010.CASE SUMMARY A 62-year-old male was admitted to the hospital due to blurred vision and red eyes,and a mass was found on the iris in the right eye.B-scan ultrasonography revealed a well-bounded high-density lesion at the corner of the anterior chamber at the 3-4 o’clock position.Phacoemulsification with simultaneous intraocular lens implantation and iridocyclectomy was performed in the right eye.The lesion was confirmed to be metastatic ccRCC by histological and immunohistochemical analyses.The patient was still alive at 9 mo after surgical treatment.Ocular metastasis can be an initial sign with a poor prognosis.Timely detection and treatment may improve survival.Clinicians should pay attention to similar metastatic diseases to prevent misdiagnosis leading to missed treatment oppor-tunities.CONCLUSION This report of the characteristics and successful management of a rare case of iris metastasis from ccRCC highlights the importance of a comprehensive medical history,histopathology,immunohistochemistry,and clinical manifestation for successful disease diagnosis. 展开更多

AIM: To analyze the difference of intestinal microbial community diversity between healthy and (S. enteritidis) orally infected ducklings.METHODS: Enterobacterial Repetitive Intergenic Consensus (ERIC)-PCR was applied to analyze the intestinal microbial community diversity and dynamic change including duodenum, jejunum, ileum, cecum and rectum from healthy ducklings and 7-day-old ducklings after oral infection with S. enteritidis at different time points.RESULTS: The intestinal microbial community of the control healthy ducklings was steady and the ERIC-PCR band numbers of the control healthy ducklings were the least with rectum and were the most with caecum. ERIC-PCR bands of orally inoculated ducklings did not obviously change until 24 h after inoculation (p.i.). The numbers of the ERIC-PCR bands gradually decreased from 24 h to 72 h p.i., and then, with the development of disease, the band numbers gradually increased until 6 d p.i. The prominent bacteria changed because of S. enteritidis infection and the DNAstar of staple of ERIC-PCR showed that aerobe and facultative aerobe (Escherichia coli, Shigella, Salmonella) became preponderant bacilli in the intestine of orally infected ducklings with SE.CONCLUSION: This study has provided significant data to clarify the intestinal microbial community diversity and dynamic change of healthy and S. enteritidis orally infected ducklings, and valuable insight into the pathogenesis of S. enteritidis infection in both human and animals. 展开更多

This study considers the Upper Cretaceous Qingshankou Formation,Yaojia Formation,and the first member of the Nenjiang Formation in the Western Slope of the northern Songliao Basin.Dark mudstone with high abundances of organic matter of Gulong and Qijia sags are considered to be significant source rocks in the study area.To evaluate their development characteristics,differences and effectiveness,geochemical parameters are analyzed.One-dimensional basin modeling and hydrocarbon evolution are also applied to discuss the effectiveness of source rocks.Through the biomarker characteristics,the source–source,oil–oil,and oil–source correlations are assessed and the sources of crude oils in different rock units are determined.Based on the results,Gulong and Qijia source rocks have different organic matter primarily detrived from mixed sources and plankton,respectively.Gulong source rock has higher thermal evolution degree than Qijia source rock.The biomarker parameters of the source rocks are compared with 31 crude oil samples.The studied crude oils can be divided into two groups.The oil–source correlations show that group I oils from Qing II–III,Yao I,and Yao II–III members were probably derived from Gulong source rock and that only group II oils from Nen I member were derived from Qijia source rock. 展开更多

Comprehensive Summary A novel transient SET mediator approach has been developed for the photoinduced radical-radical cross coupling reaction.Using the in-situ generated thianthrene radical cation as the transient SET mediator,the thiocyanation and selenocyanation of aryl thianthrenium salts have been realized under the mild conditions without the need for photocatalyst or single electron donor.In comparison with the photocatalyst enabled process,the protocol features mild conditions,simple manipulation,a broad substrate scope,excellent functional group and heterocycle tolerance.Due to the feasible accessibility of aryl thianthrenium salts,this method has also been applied in the efficient synthesis of a bioactive molecule,and the late-stage functionalization of complex arenes. 展开更多

Pretreatment of lower H2O2 doses (0.05, 0.5 and 5 mM) for 24 h was able to dose-dependently attenuate lipid peroxidation in wheat seedling leaves mediated by further oxidative damage elicited by higher dose of H2O2 (150 mM) for 6 h, with 0.5 mM H2O2 being the most effective concentrations. Further results illustrated that 0.5 mM H2O2 pretreatment triggered the biphasic production of H2O2 during a 24 h period. We also noticed that only peak Ⅰ (0.25 h) rather than peak Ⅱ (4 h) was approximately consistent with the enhancement of heme oxygenase (HO) activity, HO-1 gene expression. Meanwhile, enhanced superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, Mn-SOD and Cu, Zn-SOD transcripts might be a potential source of peak Ⅰ of endogenous H2O2. Further results confirmed that 0.5 mM H2O2 treatment for 0.5 h was able to upregulate HO gene expression, which was detected by enzyme activity determination, semi-quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and western blotting. Meanwhile, the application of N,N'-dimethylthiourea, a trap for endogenous H2O2, not only blocked the upregulation of HO, but also reversed the corresponding oxidation attenuation. Together, the above results suggest that endogenous H2O2 production (peak Ⅰ) plays a positive role in the induction of HO by enhancing its mRNA level and protein expression, thus leading to the acclimation to oxidative stress. 展开更多

Carbon monoxide (CO), an endogenous signaling molecule in animals, also provides potent cytoprotective effects including attenuation of lung lipid peroxidation induced by oxidant in the mouse. Our recent work demonstrated that 0.01 μmol/L hematin (a CO donor) treatment of wheat plants alleviated salt-induced oxidative damage in seedling leaves. In this report, we further discovered that hematin pretreatment (≤ 0.1 μmol/L) could delay wheat leaf chlorophyll loss mediated by further treatment of H202 and paraquat, two reactive oxygen species (ROS) sources, in dose-and even time-dependent manners. Also, compared with the control samples, seedling leaves pretreated with 0.01 or 0.1 μmol/L hematin for 24 h exhibited lower levels of H2O2 and lipid peroxidation, as well as higher contents of chlorophyll and activities of antioxidant enzymes. Such beneficial effects exerted by hematin were mimicked by the pretreatment of antioxidant butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), and differentially reversed when CO scavenger hemoglobin (Hb), or CO specific synthetic inhibitor ZnPPIX was added, respectively. Taken together, the results presented In this paper directly illustrate for the first time that CO is able to strongly protect plants from oxidative damage caused by the overproduction of ROS, and strengthens the evidence that CO is a potent antioxidant in various abiotic and biotic stresses, as similar results have been shown in animal tissues. 展开更多
