This article aims to study the mechanical properties of the interface between soil and roots with branches, using the pullout test method in the laboratory. The mechanical properties of the soil-root with branches interface is determined through the pullout-force and root-slippage curve (F-S curve). The results of investigating 24 Pinus tabulaeformis single roots and 55 P. tabulaeformis roots with branches demonstrated three kinds of pullout test failures: breakage failure on branching root, breakage failure on branching node, and pullout failure. The branch angle had a remarkable effect on the failure mode of the roots with branches: the maximum pullout force increased with the sum of the branch diameters and the branch angle. The peak slippage and the initial force had a positive correlation with the sum of the branch diameter. The sig- nificance test of correlation between branch angle and the initial force, however, showed they had no correlation. Branch angle and branch root diameter affect the anchorage properties between root system and soil. Therefore, it is important to investigate the anchorage mechanics of the roots with branches to understand the mechanism of root reinforcement and anchorage.展开更多

This discrete portfolio model is of integer quadratic programming problems. The separable structure of the model is investigated by using Lagrangian relaxation and dual search. Computational results show that the algorithm is capable of solving real-world portfolio problems with data from US stock market and randomly generated test problems with up to 120 securities.展开更多

The construction process may be outlined as follows. The first step is to divide the original set of support points into some subsets (blocks). Then construct each block by using symmetric branched continued fraction. Finally assemble these blocks by Newton’s method to shape the whole interpolation scheme. Our new method offers many flexible bivariate blending rational interpolation schemes which include the classical bivariate Newton’s polynomial interpolation and symmetric branched continued fraction interpolation as its special cases. The block based bivariate blending rational interpolation is in fact a kind of tradeoff between the purely linear interpolation and the purely nonlinear interpolation. Finally, numerical examples are given to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.展开更多

The method formulates the power flow equations in active power and reactive power decoupled form with polar coordinates. Second-order terms are included in the active power mismatch iteration, and constant Jacobian and Hessian matrices are used. A hybrid direct and indirect solution technique is used to achieve efficiency and robustness of the algorithm. Active power correction is solved by means of a sparse lower triangular and upper triangular (LU) decomposition algorithm with partial pivoting, and the reactive power correction is solved by means of restarted generalized minimal residual algorithm with an incomplete LU pre-conditioner. Typical distribution generation models and distribution load models are included. The impact of zero-impedance branches is explicitly modeled through reconfiguring of the adjacent branches with impedances. Numerical examples on a sample distribution system with widespread photovoltaic installations are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.展开更多
