A vivid debate on CCC (Contemporary Chinese Calligraphy) (Zhongguo xiandai shufa) is involving art critics in China nowadays. WANG Dongling and the modernists think that, despite many changes and influences, we can still refer to the traditional calligraphic lexicon to describe the calligraphic production of contemporary Chinese art. They still remain deeply rooted in the signified system of Chinese writing, even if they break with the strict rules of Chinese classical aesthetic (contamination of Western elements and focus on the stylistic exploration). WANG Nanming and the Avant-garde think that "contemporary calligraphy is not calligraphy yet": It is "anti-calligraphy", annihilates Chinese tradition, rejects the use of legible characters, experiments with new languages and new media within the idiom of international contemporary art. The result is the creation of works of art that could be assimilated to Abstract art, Abstract expressionism, Conceptual art, Performance art, Contemporary dance, Multimedia art, and even Street art. This paper aims at showing how still valid and extremely productive are both these two theoretical and creative/practical approaches to Chinese calligraphy in China nowadays. Content-based keyword spotting is more feasible than recognition-based retrieval for calligraphy document. In this paper,we propose a novel Elastic Histogram of Oriented Gradient( EHOG) descriptor for calligraphy word spotting. The presented feature is a modification of Histogram of Oriented Gradient( HOG), widely used in human detection. In our approach, the input word image is partitioned into non-uniform rectangular cells according to the calligraphy character pixel intensity, and then in each cell a histogram of orientation is accumulated dynamically. Moreover,we adopt Derivative Dynamic Time Warping( DDTW) for image feature matching, which achieves good performance in gesture recognition. Experiments demonstrate a very significant improvement when comparing our proposed feature with previously developed ones, and also show DDTW produces superior alignments between two calligraphy character feature series than DTW.展开更多

Four classical chirographies of "Kaisho", "Gyosho", "Sousho" and "Hiragana", and 47 characters for each chirography, were selected and analyzed by this system. The "Sumi" distribution of character was clarified from 12 directions and summarized into four parts of horizontal part, diagonal left part, vertical part and diagonal fight part. The character's contour line was converted to a signal data in order to calculate roundness index. The degree of character's radian was presented by roundness index. The smooth index was calculated at the same time. Additionally, width index, "Sumi" ratio, stability index also were calculated to contrast the features of each style. The main character points of four styles of "Kaisho', "Gyosho", "Sousho", "Hiragana" were extracted to compare each other, and provide a reference for learners. The learners could obtain the quantitative data to understand their work's characteristics. It can also be compared with other person's work by this system in order to improve learners' writing skill.展开更多

One of the most intriguing phenomena of the body is the video of some calligraphy creations on the Internet. The exaggerated body movements and performances have caused heated discussion among the calligraphy circles and many netizens. However, the critics still lack deep and comprehensive thinking about the problems related to the body in calligraphy. We believe that the physical dimension of calligraphy refers to the appearance of the body in the practice of calligraphy in three ways: experience, imagery, and performance. Through the consideration of the body dimension of calligraphy, this article tries to put forward the general criticism of the calligraphy works and the creative practice of physical phenomena. It should be divided into the following parts. One of them is that this kind of physical phenomenon expresses the spirit of the times and expresses the individual "feeling";"sorrow and joy" is helpful;the second is the merits and demerits of the work itself, and the third is the relationship between the generation of the work and the body and the degree of harmony.展开更多
