English is offered as a compulsory subject for all its students since the School's inception in 1971, and the subject has not moved beyond that status quo. However, in the new millennium, with USM having been selected as a research university with an apex status, the expectation of its stakeholders has increased. SDE needs to keep abreast with what is on and what is up in distance education teaching and learning so that its programmes remain relevant. It cannot remain complacent with its present courses Taking into consideration the current needs of its stakeholders within the realm of distance teaching and learning, the researchers carried out a research on the need for an EL programme. Findings show that the students agree that an English programme will help them improve their language and their upward mobility. Majority of the students will sign up for the course if it is offered. This research will provide insights for curriculum developers and lecturers at the SDE to design a new English programme tailored towards meeting the needs of their adult students展开更多

In education, the pandemic, and the measures to contain it, created a need for virtual learning/teaching and showcased the potential of distance education. This article explores the potential of distance education with an emphasis on the role played by COVID-19, the technologies employed, and the benefits, as well as how data stewardship can enhance distance education. It also describes how distance education can make learning opportunities available to the less privileged, geographically displaced, dropouts, housewives, and even workers, enabling them to partake in education while being engaged in other productive aspects of life. A case study is provided on the Dutch Organisation for Internationalisation in Education(NUFFIC) Digital Innovation Skills Hub(DISH) project, which is implemented via distance education and targeted towards marginalised individuals such as refugees and displaced persons in Ethiopia,Somalia, and other conflict zones, aiming to provide them with critical and soft skills for remote work for financial remuneration. This case study shows that distance education is the way forward in education today, as it has the capability to reach millions of learners simultaneously, educating, lifting people out of poverty, and increasing productivity and yields, while ensuring that the world is a better place for future generations.展开更多

Further enhancements in nuclear education are being considered through the use of distance learning technologies. The purpose of this work is to explore distance learning related tools to determine if they can provide an enhanced learning environment for nuclear education. In this work, a set of tools are examined that can be used to augment or replace the traditional lecture method. These tools are Mediasite, Adobe Connect, Elluminate, and Camtasia. All four tools have recording capabilities that allow the students to experience the exchange of information in different ways. This paper compares recent experiences with each of these tools in providing nuclear engineering education and assesses the various constraints and impacts on delivery through direct feedback from students and instructors. In general, the tools were found to be useful for mature students on the condition that the lecturer was comfortable with the tools and in some cases, adequate support from IT groups was provided.展开更多

The goal was to explore to what extent the technical and organisational prerequisites for introducing the system have been fulfilled at the very institution--E-learning system provider, and to what extent the full-time maritime students and part-time students-seafarers are ready and trained to adopt such a system. In order to gather insights and make conclusions, the analytical method and the survey of students were used. A total of 930 full-time and part-time students (seafarers) were surveyed. The goal of these surveys was to find out the educational needs of both student groups, as well as their technical preconditions (e.g., having a PC at work or at home, access to the intemet, and the like) and competencies (e.g., computer literacy) that are necessary for active involvement in the e-learning system. A particularly interesting part of the research tackled the psychological predisposition of students, i.e., whether they were willing to use the system at all. A special part of the research was focused on issues regarding the costs and the available time that the students/seafarers have for using the e-learning system. The research has revealed that there are neither obstacles nor initial constraints for the implementation of the e-learning system in education of maritime students and seafarers at the University of Split. Moreover, the students have a positive attitude towards the e-learning system, and most of them are very enthusiastic about its implementation. The scientific contribution of this paper is provided by an analytical model exploring and defining the necessary prerequisites for introducing the e-learning system. The advantage of the model lies in its wide and multi-disciplinary approach to all these prerequisites, ranging from psychological to purely technical, financial, time, organisational and other aspects. An interesting issue is the question of"good will" for launching such systems at the institutions which obviously meet all necessary prerequisites for their introduction, including the enthusiasm of their students and teachers. The case study shows that, apparently, the university management and the wider community have not recognised many a benefit of the e-learning system. This sounds paradoxical as it is precisely the very academic community that should act as the designer and the initiator of social changes, in social systems in general and in education systems in particular.展开更多

文摘In recent years, online education has grown rapidly and expanded globally. As an undergraduate student, the author took part in massive open online courses(MOOCs)as an elective. While enjoying the convenience of high-tech distance education, the author also became aware of its shortcomings. For instance, when students are confused about a certain topic, they are unable to clarify with their instructors in real time since most of the time, recorded instructional videos are used.Students also tend to listen passively during lessons, indicating that they may not absorb information or“positively reinforce”what they know or have learned. When discussing the characteristics of MOOCs,the author hopes to demonstrate how online education may influence traditional teaching and serves as an excellent complement to conventional classrooms.

文摘BACKGROUND The coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)epidemic disrupted education systems by forcing systems to shift to emergency online leaning.Online learning satisfaction affects academic achievement. Many factors affect online learning satisfaction. However there is little study focused on personal characteristics, mental status, and coping style when college students participated in emergency online courses.regression analyses were performed to identify factors that affected online learning satisfaction.RESULTS Descriptive findings indicated that 62.9%(994/1580)of students were satisfied with online learning.Factors that had significant positive effects on online learning satisfaction were online learning at scheduled times, strong exercise intensity, good health, regular schedule, focusing on the epidemic less than one hour a day,and maintaining emotional stability.Positive coping styles were protective factors of online learning satisfaction.Risk factors for poor satisfaction were depression, neurasthenia, and negative coping style.CONCLUSION College students with different personal characteristics, mental status, and coping style exhibited different degrees of online learning satisfaction. Our findings provide reference for educators, psychologists, and school adminis-trators to conduct health education intervention of college students during emergency online learning.
文摘Purpose:This study aimed to explore whether the attitudes of nursing students toward the use of mobile learning are positive or negative and to identify the factors influencing their attitudes by reviewing the literature. Methods:Electronic search of six databases, including PubMed,the Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature,ProQuest,Web of Science,EMBASE,and Cochrane Library, was conducted, and relevant references within articles were manually searched.Retrieval time was from inception to October 21,2020.The literature review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines and the integrative review method. The Mixed Method Appraisal Tool(MMAT)was used for quality assessment. Results:A total of 316 articles were identified, and 18 English-language studies were finally included by reviewing titles, abstracts, and full text.Six quantitative, five qualitative, and seven mixed-method articles related to nursing students’attitudes toward the use of mobile learning were identified. The results showed that most nursing students had positive attitudes toward mobile learning.Although students expressed strong intentions for mobile learning, the actual usage rate in practical settings was low.Several advantageous factors included usefulness, convenience, and ease of use, whereas disadvantageous factors included hardware facility, updated content, and software stability. Conclusion:Most nursing students have positive attitudes and willingness to mobile learning, but the actual use rate remains low.Advantageous and disadvantageous factors coexist.Further studies are needed to assess how mobile learning improves nursing students’clinical knowledge and improves patient care.
