Technical illustration based on 3D CSG models

This paper presents an automatic non-photorealistic rendering approach to generating technical illustration from 3D models. It first decomposes the 3D object into a set of CSG primitives, and then performs the hidden surface removal based on the prioritized list, in which the rendition order of CSG primitives is sorted out by depth. Then, each primitive is illustrated by the pre-defined empirical lighting model, and the system mimics the stroke-drawing by user-specified style. In order to artistically and flexibly modulate the illumination, the empirical lighting model is defined by three major components: parameters of multi-level lighting intensities, parametric spatial occupations for each lighting level, and an interpolation method to calculate the lighting distribution over primitives. The stylized illustration is simulated by a grid-based method, in which we ‘fill’ the desirable pictorial units into the spatial occupation of CSG primitives, instead of “pixel-by-pixel” painting. This region-by-region shading facilitates the simulation of illustration styles.

In this paper, we conduct research on the packaging and illustration design development trend from the psychology and aesthetics perspective. Commercial illustration in packaging design which can provide extremely diversified forms of style, to convey the brand＇ s core idea, brand or product difference, and brand personality. Application of illustration in packaging design should use human language, which would make the commodity characteristics. Our methodology combines the principles of psychology and aesthetics to optimize the traditional approaches which will not only enhance the design pattern of the current model and help make innovative products.

In this paper, the authors deeply studied 12 moxibustion pictures in Jiujing Tu 《灸经图》, Illustration of Moxibustion）, one of Dunhuang book relics, and described the academic thoughts of health maintenance contained in the book. It was considered that the health maintenance thoughts of humanistic thought, common maintenance of body and spirit, balanced interaction, and maintenance of essence, qi and spirit contained in the book were very sophisticated to greatly constitute the academic thoughts of modern health maintenance.

Photographic Illustrations in Chinese College English Textbooks: A Semiotic Analysis

In recent years, the curriculum of College English(CE) in China has seen a trend that veers away from pure language-oriented teaching toward an emphasis on the cultivation of students' cultural or intercultural competence. In this context, the CE textbooks have been highly responsiblized in the transformative agenda, and the use of photographic illustrations in the textbooks has been increasingly valued as a way to include culture carriers. Our study draws perspectives from communicative semiotics and visual semiotics to investigate the way in which photographic illustrations have been involved in the learning process in order to find out whether and how they promote students' cultural and intercultural acquisition. We focus on the semiosis process engendered by the photos as signs and their modes of representation, which largely determines the process and result of cultural acquisition. Our analysis demonstrates that while the photographic illustrations have been designed to enhance cultural learning in hypothetical situations, when placed in a real learning context together with the texts and learning tasks, some of the photos may not successfully promote the process of cultural acquisition, since learners' interpretation of the photos can be diverted or limited by other aspects of the learning context.

A STUDY ABOUT SOIL WATER CHARACTERISTIC,CONDUCTIVITY OF WATER AND EQUILIBRIUM ADSORPTION OF CUPRIC ION IN SOIL——A UTILITY EQUIPMENT USED IN SOIL SCIENCE AND ITS ILLUSTRATION OF USE

A utility equipment used in soil science is designed and installed.The equipment can be used in research pro- grams of soil water and solute transport.Pressure in pressure chamber of the equipment in which a tested soil sam- ple is laid can be adjusted exactly so that we can determine the water content of soil sample.With the equipment we can not only study the problems related water movement in soil but also measure some solute,such as cadmi- um,plumbum and so on,adsorption on surface of soil in saturated and unsaturated state.As an illustration of the use of the equipment,we give the isothermal of cupric ion adsorption in soil.This equipment can be used in the re- search work and application of soil science.

Translated Illustration and the Indigenization of Christianity in Late Qing Chinese Christian Novels

＂Intersemiotic translation＂ is categorized by Roman Jakobson as one of three types of translation. Translation of illustrations in the late Qing novels, either directly from verbal signs or visual signs, can also be regarded as a typical kind of ＂intersemiotic translation.＂ The present article studies illustrations in Chinese Christian literature in the late Qing period, especially those in the Chinese translations of John Bunyan＇s works, The Pilgrim＇s Progress and The Holy War. Questions to ponder are how inter-semiotic translation occurs between these illustrations--in either transferring or transplanting the meanings from one sign system to another--and how it establishes its legitimacy through religious negotiation, ideological conflict, and cultural integration. The illustrations in the Chinese translation versions of The Pilgrim ＂s Progress manifest the translators＇ and illustrators＇ manipulation of repertoires of Chinese religious signs, thereby indigenizing a foreign religion. These illustrations, nevertheless, are not only associated with Christianity, but also with the long-lasting visual signs of Chinese culture. Hence these translated illustrations could be considered as a type of ＂Translated Christianity.＂

A Systemic Functional Semiotic Investigation of Illustrations in Chinese Poem Books:An Ontogenetic Perspective

While images have been sufficiently investigated from the systemic functional semiotic approach in various multimodal text types,illustrations in poem books have received relatively little attention.This paper analyzed 2233 images in 15 poem picture-books(IPBs)targeted at different age groups,and classified as pre-school,school and adult groups.Statistics herein show that visual meanings in different groups manifest significantly different patterns in terms of ideational,interpersonal and compositional functions.The distributions are clearly motivated by different pedagogical functions,moving from basic cognitive development,to literacy cultivation and affiliation,and finally to enculturation of aesthetics and social values.The study therefore informs IPB practitioners how to match the visual design of illustrations with the pedagogical needs of readers of different ages.

Application of Creative Translation Thought on Exhibition English——A Case of China-ASEAN EXPO

Exhibition English as a commonly used language has a very significant position. However, the translation methods are yet to be improved. The author states the present translation situation of exhibition English and exited problems; then introduces the content of"creative translation thought"and analyzes the methods by means of examples from China-ASEAN EXPO. Finally, it illustrates the advantage of using it to promote the development of exhibition English translation from English to Chinese.
