Though its various physiological/therapeutic effects have been reported, effects of IM of the head and spine on heart rate variability (HRV) have not been studied. Thus, this study evaluated the effects of IM of the head and spine on HRV in healthy volunteers.METHODS: Thirty subjects were randomly divided into 3 sessions: (1) IM, (2) tap water massage (TWM) and (3) prone rest (PR). Heart rate (HR) and HRV were assessed before and after each intervention session.RESULTS: A significant increase in the mean of the intervals between adjacent QRS complexes or the instantaneous HR (RRI), square root of mean of sum of squares of differences between adjacent normal to normal (NN) intervals (RMSSD), number of interval differences of successive NN intervals greater than 50 milliseconds (NN50), proportion derived by dividing NN50 by total number of NN intervals along with significant reduction in HR after IM session; significant increase in RRI along with significant reduction in HR after TWM, and a significant increase only in RMSSD after PR were observed. However, there was no significant difference between the sessions.CONCLUSION: Results of this study suggest that 20 min of IM of the head and spine is effective in reducing HR and improving HRV through vagal dominance in healthy volunteers.展开更多

文摘Objective:A case study was performed to discuss the efficacy of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)treatments on spasmodic torticollis.Materials and methods:A 28-year-old male was diagnosed with spasmodic torticollis due to twist and turn of neck after being frightened, who was unable to take care of himself for over 3 months. He once took an oral non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, but no significant improvement was seen in his symptoms. After a few months, his symptoms got worse, with onset of spasms. Therefore,he was treated at our hospital with traditional Chinese prescription and Tuina massage therapy for 3 months and followed up for 6 months. The Toronto Western Spasmodic Torticollis Rating Scale(TWSTRS)and the Craniocervical Dystonia Questionnaire(CDQ-24)scores were recorded before and after treatment and during follow-up observations to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy. Results:Compared to the baseline, the TWSTRS and CDQ-24 scores decreased significantly, and there was no evident recurrence of his symptoms for at least 6 months of follow-up.Moreover,no apparent discomfort or side effects were observed during the treatment. Conclusion:Jingu abdominal massage combined with traditional Chinese prescription has a certain efficacy in the treatment of spasmodic torticollis, with almost no side effects, which can be easily accepted by patients.
文摘Overuse injuries of the elbow and forearm are very common in athletes. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of muscle stretching and deep friction massage with using wrist joint support during management of tennis elbow. This study included forty patients with tennis elbow divided into two equal groups: the first group with a mean age 38.1 ± 0.294 followed a physical therapy program in form of deep friction massage on the proximal attachment of wrist extensor muscles, the second group with a mean age 37.6 ± 0.253, submitted to stretching exercises of wrist extensors. Both of groups submitted to ultrasonic therapy with wrist splint during treatment period, three sessions per week for six weeks. Outcome measures were universal goniometer, visual analogue scale, and squeezing sphygmomanometer. The results showed that there was a significant improvement in ROM of wrist flexion and wrist extension, and handgrip in second group and it was more than in the first group while no significant difference in pain. This study showed that stretching exercise is more beneficial in the management of patients with tennis elbow.
文摘This article presents the potential integration of psychotherapy and massage when considering the essence of their beneficial effects. The essence of this model of practice is multifaceted, combining principles from anatomy, physiology and neuroscience with psychotherapy to benefit patient care.It has been advocated that possessing multidisciplinary knowledge from these areas of science enhances psychotherapists' holistic care of their depressive patients.A narrative review of the literatures and a qualitative, conceptual synthesis has been performed to create a new theoretical-pragmatic construct. This article introduces the concept of massage practice as a part of psychotherapy practice and presents the potential integration of psychotherapeutic knowledge with clinical decision-making and the management of depressive symptoms. The authors emphasize the usefulness of multi- and interdisciplinary knowledge in the psychotherapeutic process and explain how this knowledge might be extrapolated and incorporated into theoretical and practical settings to benefit depressive patients. The justification for this concept is also presented. The principles set out in this article may be a useful source of information for psychotherapists concerned about their patients' holistic well-being in addition to the psychopathology for which they have sought treatment.Researchers and psychotherapists can obtain valuable and additional knowledge through cross-fertilization of ideas across the arguments presented here.
文摘Objective To observe clinical therapeutic effects of integrative acupuncture therapy on gonarthrosis. Methods One hundred and sixty cases of gonarthrosis were randomly divided into two groups (80 cases in each group) : an observation group treated by electroacupuncture (EA) plus massage at points and a control group treated with conventional medicine. Results In the observation group, the cured rate was 57.50%, and the effective rate was 88.75%. In the control group, the cured rate was 36.25%, and the effective rate was 73.75%. The differences between the two groups in the cured rate and the total effective rate were of significance (X^2-test, P〈0. 01, P〈0.05). Conclusion EA combined with massage at points is definitely effective in treating gonarthrosis.
文摘OBJECTIVE: Ice massage (IM) is one of the treatment procedures used in hydrotherapy. However, there was no significant difference between the sessions.CONCLUSION: Results of this study suggest that 20 min of IM of the head and spine is effective in reducing HR and improving HRV through vagal dominance in healthy volunteers.
文摘Objective: To observe the therapeutic effects of the qi-regulating massotherapy (通脉调气推拿法) for treatment of tonic headache. Methods: According to different clinical types, 150 cases of tonic headache were treated by the qi-regulating massotherapy. Evaluations were done according to the scores for physiology, behavior, intensity of pain, and the therapeutic effects. Results: After treatment, the total score in the 150 cases significantly decreased as compared with that before treatment (P<0.01). The total effective rate was 93.3%, and the effective rates for all the types were over 90%. Conclusion: The qi-regulating massotherapy is indicated for all types of tonic headache with obvious therapeutic effects.
