Objective:To observe the regulative effect of auricular acupuncture, moxibustion and Chinese herbs on immunologic function in the D-galactose-induced aging mouse and to probe the feasibility and possible mechanisms for delaying aging, so as to provide experimental basis for acupuncture, moxibustion and Chinese herbs for delaying aging. Methods: Aging mouse model was established by subcutaneous injection of D-galactose, and treated by auricular acupuncture, auricular acupuncture plus moxibustion, and auricular acupuncture plus Chinese herbs respectively for 6 weeks and then serum interleukin-2 (IL-2) and IL-6 contents and splenic lymphocyte transformation rate were compared among the groups. Results: Compared with the young group, the serum IL-2 level and the splenic lymphocyte transformation rate significantly decreased and the IL-6 level significantly increased in the aging mouse. After treatment by auricular acupuncture, auricular acupuncture plus Chinese herbs, especially auricular acupuncture plus moxibustion, the serum IL-2 level and the splenic lymphocyte transformation rate significantly increased, and the IL-6 level significantly decreased as compared with the model group. Conclusions: Combined application of auricular acupuncture, moxibustion and Chinese herbs can improve the decline or dysfunction of immunological function in the aging organism to a certain extent. 展开更多

Diabetes refers to the disease with the main symptom of "three more and less."Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)regards Yin deficiency and dryness heat as the basic pathogenesis, and mostly adopts the method of clearing away heat, nourishing yin and generating fluid. The author thinks that the deficiency of Yuanyang in Zang Fu organs, the lack of stimulation and promotion, the metabolic disorder of body fluid, the loss of moistening of Zang Fu organs, and the onset of diabetes.Body fluid metabolism is closely related to the spleen and kidney.Deficiency of Yang Qi is the root of thirst, stagnation of body fluid and Qi is the pathogenesis, and thirst is the final result. 展开更多

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) herbs for tonifying Qi and kidney, and replenishing spleen on intermittent asthma in children aged 2 and 5 years.METHODS: A randomized, single-blind, placebo controlled trial was conducted. Children with intermittent asthma were enrolled and their baseline conditions were measured using a questionnaire. A total of 60 participants, aged 2 to 5, were randomized into either the treatment group(n = 40) or the placebo group(n = 20). The treatment group was treated with granules of TCM herbs for tonifying Qi and kidney, and replenishing spleen, and the placebo group was given placebo granules for 3 months. The number of asthma attacks was counted and TCM syndrome scores were measured at 1, 2, 3, 6, 9,and 12 months. The airway resistance and levels of eosinophil cationic protein for the two groups were observed before and after 3 months. The results were statistically analyzed.RESULTS: Compared with the placebo group, the number of asthma attacks significantly decreased in the treatment group(P < 0.05). For the treatment group, the TCM syndrome scores decreased after 1 and 2 months; there was also a significant difference in scores between the two groups(P < 0.05).The difference remained after the medicine was stopped for 9 months(P < 0.05). After the 3-month treatment, compared with the placebo group, the airway resistance decreased in the treatment group(P < 0.05). No adverse events were reported in the treatment group.CONCLUSION: The TCM herbs for tonifying Qi and kidney, and replenishing spleen reduced the number of intermittent asthma attacks, decreased the TCM syndrome scores, and reduced the airway resistance in the children aged 2 to 5. 展开更多

Objective To compare the difference in the therapeutic effects on diarrhea- type irritable bowel syndrome (D-IBS) between acupuncture based on soothing the liver and strengthening the spleen and western medicine. Methods Seventy cases were randomized into an acupuncture group and a western medicine group, 35 cases in each one. In the acupuncture group, the conventional acupuncture was applied at Tianshu {天枢 ST 25), Zusanli (足三里 ST 36), Shangjuxu {上巨虚 ST 37), Sanyinjiao (三阴交 SP 6), Taichong (太冲 LR 3) and so on. Electric stimulation was supplemented at bilateral ST 25. The treatment was given once a day, 3-4 treatments in a week. In the western medicine group, pinaverium bromide (dicetel) was prescribed for oral administration, 50 mg each time, three times a day. Four weeks made one session in the two groups. Separately, before treatment and after 1 session treatment, the integral of clinical symptom and the score in the scale of the quality of life measure for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-Q OL) were observed for the patients in the two groups. The efficacy and recurrence rate were assessed in the two groups. Results The symptom integral and IBS-QOL score in the two groups were improved significantly after treatment Call P〈0.01), and the improvements in the acupuncture group were superior to that in the western medicine group (P〈0.01). The effective rate was 94.3% {33/35) in the acupuncture group, which was superior to 77.1% (27/35) in the western medicine group (P〈0.01). In 3 months, the recurrence rate was 36.4% (12/33) in the acupuncture group, which was lower apparently than 72.0% (18/25) in the western medicine group (P〈O.01). Conclusion Acupuncture therapy based on soothing the liver and strengthening the spleen achieves the superior efficacy on D-IBS as compared with western medication, pinaverium bromide. This therapy improves apparently the quality of life of the patients and is lower in recurrence rate. 展开更多

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the therapeutic effect of the herbal medication Xiao Pi-II on the symptoms and gastric motility of patients with functional dysepsia (FD). METHODS: A total of 180 FD patients were divided randomly and equally into Xiao Pi-II and mosapride groups. The two groups were treated with Xiao Pi-II (100 mL, t.d.s., ante cibum) and mosapride (5 mg, t. d.s., ante cibum) for 2 weeks. Before treatment and 3 days after all medication was stopped, patients responded to a questionnaire evaluating gastrointestinal symptoms and were assessed with abdominal three dimensional ultrasonography (3D-US) for gastric motility. RESULTS: Gastrointestinal symptoms (especially bloating, post-prandial fullness and eructation) were improved significantly in FD patients treated with Xiao Pi-II (P<0.05, P<0.05, and P<0.05), but no significant difference was found in the mosapride group (P>0.05). The effective rates in the Xiao Pi-II and mosapride group were 86.7% and 60.0%, respectively (P<0.05). The gastric liquid emptyingrate (GLER) in the Xiao Pi-II group showed a significant increase (P<0.01) after 2 weeks of treatment but there was no significant change (P>0.05) of GLER in the mosapride group. CONCLUSION: Compared with mosapride, Xiao Pi-II improved symptoms and GLER significantly in FD patients with delayed gastric emptying. 展开更多
