In his life, he wrote more than 300 short stories and a full-length novel. Sacrifice of Love is a typical O Henry's novel, which was formed in American society that changed from the rapid development ofcapitalism to the era of imperialism. During this period, the rotten social system, ruthless competition and insatiable exploitation jugulatcd and contorted human's emotions. In such a society, O. Henry, on the one hand, advocated and paid a tribute to beautiful love. on the other hand, he felt helpless and hateful to the cruel social and hard living conditions. Love itself is holy and sweet, but due to the decay of the social system, love was full of bitterness. This paper focuses on analyzing O. Henry's views of love, the reasons of formation and the expression skills. The subject of the Sacrifice of Love is: love itselfis sweet and holy, but in the capitalist society, it is destined to be a tragedy.展开更多

This is attained by a thorough explication of the principle of indiscernibles, the abolition of the principle of locality, the advanced conception ofentelecheia in late Leibniz, and the character of the perception of each monad, which allow to discover in Leibniz's idea of space the notion of the hologram, and the holographic interconnectedness of things in the Universe.展开更多

More precisely, I am interested in the observer's imagination as it is manifested in this relationship. I argue that every act of empathy involves the imagination, but the act of imagination is never understood as an act of empathy. This article will take a new approach towards the perception of a work of art and challenges the traditional notion of empathy as "looking into," "looking in," or "seeing-in." I describe the experience of empathy as a lived experience, where I understand it as a type of intentional act that is distinct from imagination; meanwhile, I show that the imagination plays a role in the empathetic experience of the work of art. How? I understand this situation as one that brings the observer into a new reality, an intersubjective mode of being where she finds a better understanding of her own (as an observer) inner world. I wish to argue that empathy gives a new dimension to experience, where being "here" becomes being "there." Empathy is in fact a special form of meeting the Other. In the case of a work of art, we do not meet the Other as a person who lives their daily life like everyone else; instead we have an independent empathetic experience of the world, taking place within the work of art, in relation to the depicted subject. The nature of empathy is that it enables the observer to enter the deepest intimacy of the work of art and dwell inside it. This depends solely on the observer on how open they are to this world and how much it coincides with the observer's will, as she always retains limitless freedom when interpreting a work of art.展开更多

I maintain that becoming fully a person and respecting others as persons are achievements that are not assured for all of us. Thus, for the purpose I prepare the ground for an account of good life that rests on valuational consciousness. I propose that one may ascribe valuational consciousness to a person who is a value-sensitive rational being striving to attain a kind of inner transparency. Evidently, to say that a person has valuational consciousness is to stress the values, which are built into personal consciousness. The life of a person, whether that of truth, courage, nobility, justice, kindness, is a life marked by ego transcending personal consciousness that reaches out to humanity at large. And such a repository of values enables a human being to attain the ideal of good life. The ideal of good life, I contend, consists of attaining the higher order posture of selflessness--a posture of inner transparency. It is to shake off the egocentric partiality that characterizes our usual attitudinal stance towards one another.展开更多

This study utilized ethnographic methods, a combination of methods including observation, in-depth interview, focus group and the unobtrusive method including collecting written information. The study showed that the decision of Solo city government which tended to privilege street vendors' interests resulted in the life chance of prostitution was deteriorated and marginalized. The city government has accommodated street vendors' demand to remove ,the organized prostitution community operating in Silir-Semanggi of Solo since 1960s as one of requirements for their relocation to this area, where the new built traditional market with more than one thousand kiosks was provided for street vendors. The procuresses' demand to obtain their rights of the land they occupied for more than 20 years on behalf of their legal ownership failed due to administrative, bureaucratic and legal obstacles. Prostitutes were inhumanly chased away by the city government apparatuses in collaboration with the police from the site of operation in 2006 and it resulted that the social and economic lives of procuresses and prostitutes got worse since their prostitution activities in this location were totally forbidden and unfinished. Both procuresses and prostitutes were marginalized because they did not have links to the powerful stakeholder who were able to protect their rights. Their health was in danger because the city government's concern to their activities was limited in particularly since 1998 when the location was formally closed by Solo mayor of the new order.展开更多

We are interested in these theoretical approaches (Foucault's biopolitics and Dussel's Liberation Politics) given the political implications and prominence they grant to the notions of body and life in contemporary societies. The works we are interested in to contrast present different standpoints: In the first one, life is related to the exercise of political power, whereas in the second one its approach concentrates on political emancipation processes. We believe, however, that it is possible to find convergence points between them that allow us to explain, to a certain extent, the importance of the notion of life in contemporary societies. For this purpose, we will carry out an analysis of the notion of "counter behaviors," a concept that Foucault briefly develops to explain how life has not been thoroughly integrated to technologies that dominate or run it but instead escape them ceaselessly.展开更多

This paper attempts to document the long-term process of bodily and mindful cultivation from an anthropological, participant-observation, and self-reflective point of view. I will describe my experiences from entering the world of Taiwan Residents tea art through learning the great variety of teas and the techniques for making them, designing my own tea sets, and performing in tea gatherings. This learning process has gone well beyond what is required of a researcher, or a good observer, because it has not only allowed me to understand, interpret, and analyze the aesthetics and ritual of Taiwan Residents tea art but it has also required that I "designs" or be creative in presenting Taiwan Residents tea art to my own cultural members. Dewey's criticism of rigid moral training in traditional schools gives credence to the latter trend. For instance, in 2000 Taiwan's Ministry of Education decided to eliminate moral education as a required subject from the national school curriculum and suggested that all schools and teachers should infuse morality into the school culture as a whole. More than a decade has passed, and many people question whether schools have been infused with morality. Some even suggest that not teaching morality in schools has led to an eroding of moral standards in society at large. In light of this controversy, in this paper, I take a close look at Dewey's conception of the nature of morality, and in particular, his distinction between reflective and customary morality. Drawing on Dewey's own moral struggles in life to illustrate his major contentions, I explore what Dewey means by moral reflection, dramatic rehearsal, and growth. Finally, I argue for the importance of committed moral values as the foundation for realizing Dewey's ideal of reflective intelligence. Overall, I aim to unpack the underlying assumptions in Dewey's ideas in order to renew his lessons for moral education today.展开更多

Methods: Fifty patients, including 29 females and 21 males, with a median age 62 years (35–82 years), 13 of whom were treated with pemetrexed only and the left 37 cases were treated with pemetrexed combined with platinum in the Department of Oncology, Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University from June 2006 to March 2009. Single agent regimen: patients received pemetrexed 500 mg/m2 on day 1 with every 21 days. Combination regimen: patients received pemetrexed 500 mg/m2 on day 1 and carboplatin 300 mg/m2 on day 1 or cisplatin 35 mg/m2 on day 1 to day 3 or nedaplatin 80 mg/m2 on day 1 by intravenous infusion with 21 days as one cycle. RECIST 1.0 standard was used to evaluate the clinical efficiency, and the WHO toxicity standard was used to evaluate toxic reaction, and the QOL was used to evaluate the quality of life. Results: All patients were given 162 cycles (at least 2 cycles, at most 6 cycles) and the response rate of all the patients were evaluated. There were 2 complete remission (CR), 7 partial remission (PR), 22 stable disease (SD) and 19 progressive disease (PD) in the group, the overall response rate was (RR) was 18.0% and disease control rate (DCR) 62.0%. The quality of life improvement rate reaches 58.0%. The major toxic reaction included neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, hypemia, nausea, and vomiting. Most of the severity of these effects was grade I–II and well tolerated. Conclusion: Chemotherapy with pemetrexed or pemetrexed combined with platinum in the treatment of advanced non-small cell lung cancer is effective, safe and well-tolerable, which can improve quality of life of the patient.展开更多

It is thus a plentiful source of biomass and could be used as a biofuel. In this study, the pyrolytic characteristics and kinetics of E. prolifera were investigated using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) method. Cornstalk and sawdust were used as comparisons. Pyrolytic characteristics were studied using TG-DTG (thermogravimetry-derivative thermogravimetry) curves. Three stages in the pyrolytic process were determined: dehydration, dramatic weight loss and slow weight loss. E. prolifera was pyrolyzed at a lower initial temperature than the two terrestrial biomass forms. The apparent activation energy values for the three types of biomass were calculated and the mechanism functions were determined using 16 different mechanism functions, frequently used in thermal kinetics analysis. Activation energy values varied with mechanism function and the range of activation energy values for E. prolifera, cornstalk, and sawdust were 25-50 kJ/mol, 60-90 kJ/mol and 120-155 kJ/mol, respectively. This indicates that E. prolifera has low thermal stability for pyrolysis and good combustion characteristics.展开更多

It gives consumers a broader perspective, while also improving the self-consciousness of consumers. These effects will no longer fully believe in traditional consumer marketing "bombing" the dissemination and indoctrination, they are more inclined to be questioned brands and products, and they can express their views on the basis that affects other people. In this era of environment, if businesses and vendors for their view is indifferent attitude, they will lose a lot of attention to the crowd, and also it makes the influence of the traditional marketing model spread greatly reduced.展开更多

This risky situation calls for a new security concept, one that transcends traditional state centrism, national supremacy and coercion. The new security concept, which should assimilate the general theory of grand strategy, focuses on a vision that spans time and space, valuing humankind as it exists as one of the dynamic factors of nature and society. The essentials of the new security concept are to recognize balanced development as the substance of security and to govern national strength and the application of means and tactics. It aims at realizing comprehensive security across various social fields within states, to achieve mutual security among national, international and individual actors, as well as harmony between man and nature, continuous security leading to lasting and universal peace in the future.展开更多

The traditional rites that were effective in instituting measures that ensured chastity among the Akan teenagers are now replaced by foreign rites that seem to be less effective. This paper examines teenage pregnancy and its morality among the traditional Akan of Ghana. The paper discovers that the morality of teenage pregnancy among the traditional Akan depends on the circumstances under which the pregnancy occurs. The following among others are identified as the major factors responsible for the upsurge of teenage pregnancy among the Akan: the breakdown of the extended family system and social cohesion; the influx of foreign cultural and religious practices coupled with the wrong mentality that indigenous African cultural practices are uncivil. The paper posits that the bragor9 and kyiribra rites are important traditional tools which can be refined and used together with other modern methods to remedy the upsurge of teenage pregnancy and restore the moral sanity that existed among the Akan.展开更多

Conclusion: Chemotherapy with pemetrexed or pemetrexed combined with platinum in the treatment of advanced non-small cell lung cancer is effective, safe and well-tolerable, which can improve quality of life of the patient.

文摘The marine macroalgae Enteromorpha prolifera was one of the main algal genera that occurred in the widespread green tides in Qingdao, China, during the summers of 2007, 2008 and 2010. This indicates that E. prolifera has low thermal stability for pyrolysis and good combustion characteristics.
文摘In the digital age, people' s lifestyles and ways of thinking are in a series of changes, this change also makes it a big shift in consumer attitudes. In this era of environment, if businesses and vendors for their view is indifferent attitude, they will lose a lot of attention to the crowd, and also it makes the influence of the traditional marketing model spread greatly reduced.
文摘While the threat of war has decreased, there have appeared intricate security issues that affect all aspects of human life, breaking through various defenses and threatening the well being of all actors in the contemporary world, including nations, groups and individuals. It aims at realizing comprehensive security across various social fields within states, to achieve mutual security among national, international and individual actors, as well as harmony between man and nature, continuous security leading to lasting and universal peace in the future.
文摘In the past, teenage pregnancy was very rare among the traditional Akan people, currently, however, it has reached an alarming stage. The paper posits that the bragor9 and kyiribra rites are important traditional tools which can be refined and used together with other modern methods to remedy the upsurge of teenage pregnancy and restore the moral sanity that existed among the Akan.
