Conventional regression analysis can only produce "average" and "global" parameter estimates rather than "local" parameter estimates which vary over space in some spatial systems. Geographically weighted regression (GWR), on the other hand, is a simple but useful new technique for the analysis of spatial non-stationarity. Results show that there is a significant difference between OLS and GWR in estimating the parameters of R&D knowledge production, and that the relationships between level of regional innovation activities and various factors show considerable spatial variability.展开更多

Taking the case of China's Yangtze River Delta(YRD) region, we particularly focus on knowledge circulation within and beyond the YRD region by analyzing the pattern and process of knowledge collaboration at different geographical scales during the 2004–2014 period. Results show that the structure of scientific knowledge collaboration as reflected by co-publications has been strongest at the national scale whereas that of technological knowledge collaboration as measured by co-patents has been strongest at the global scale. Despite this difference, the structure of both scientific and technological knowledge collaboration has been functionally polycentric at the megalopolitan scale but become less so at the national and global scales. The ‘globally connected but locally disconnected' pattern of Shanghai's external knowledge collaboration suggests that the gateway role of the YRD megalopolis in promoting knowledge collaboration at different geographical scales will take time before it is fully realized.展开更多

A favorable microclimate has a positive influence on both commercial and social activities. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between the human being and the surrounding thermal environment in terms of thermal acceptability, physical quality of the place, emotional state and the usage of the urban space in hot dry Damascus, Syria. The study is based on questionnaire surveys during the summer and winter in six locations with different microclimates. It is shown that the urban design plays a significant role in improving the microclimate, especially during the summer. The study also illustrates that when people's thermal perception is within the thermally acceptable range (i.e., slightly cool, comfortable and slightly warm) they experience the urban design as significantly more beautiful and more pleasant than during thermally unacceptable conditions. The results indicate that there is an interactive relationship between the urban design and humans' emotional state. Our findings suggest that a new perspective is needed for determining urban microclimate requirements and incorporating them into the urban design process to enhance the thermal environment in outdoor urban spaces in Damascus.展开更多

By considering China′s urbanization as a ′testing ground′ of ′western′ theories, these studies are important for the understanding of China′s ongoing urban restructuring and exchanging knowledge with ′western′ insights. Based on a survey of existing studies, this paper identifies various endogenous and exogenous concepts and explanations of China′s urbanization. It is suggested that China′s urbanization is mainly driven by a combination of political decentralization and neoliberalization with various forms of social stratification and mobility. However, it is argued that the distinctness of the ′China Model′, which is usually used to support the legitimacy of studies of China′s urbanization, has led to many controversial arguments and diminished the due contributions of Chinese scholars in the knowledge production of China′s urbanization. To consolidate the legitimacy of studies on China′s urbanization and enhance the roles of Chinese scholars, we suggest future studies to pay more attentions to the fundamental theories with looser constraints and ′true questions′ on China′s urbanization.展开更多

The extensive reliance of competitiveness-oriented urban governance agendas on the knowledge-based, "new" economy, introduced the notion of "creativity" into discussion on the future of urban development. Though still on the margins of serious urban theory, the discourse on "creative cities" that emerged in the early 2000s, has already had massive influence on the ways in which cities are managed and transformed in Europe. After examination of how the competitiveness-oriented strategies based on creativity and related to the qualities of place increase cultural and social sustainability of urban transformation and development, this paper briefly rethinks the current urban development policy of the city of Sarajevo in relation to the notion of "place", by leaning on the contemporary European urban development paradigm. The conclusion points out that the sustainable increase of urban competitiveness in Sarajevo should be pursued by the development projects of urban transformation promoting creative knowledge sector, based on the inclusive cultural urban narratives related to places, thus assuring simultaneous growth of creative knowledge industries and preservation of diverse social geography.展开更多

It is widely spreading the concept of Old Town as Natural Shopping Centre: with this word, we define commercial complex and not homogenous places, developed over time without programming unit. designed as a unique space, which fall within a certain urban perimeter, work together as a business, financial administration, facilities and service all coordinated by a common policy development. One of the important points regarding the environmental issue is how to develop tools in order to analyze and manage the natural resources in a balanced way. However, in the literature there are no studies that made use of a knowledge-based approach to implement environmental accounting in organizations. This work aims to examine how environmental accounting can contribute to the knowledge creation in organizations. It held an exploratory, descriptive study and a research-action. The methodological procedures held were: literature review and development of a research-action in a forest enterprise between October 2008 and January 2011. During the interviews, the creation and change of routines and activities was pointed out, such as classification of expenditures schedules, creation of new accounts and new knowledge which help the planning and decision-making process in the organization. This work has an original character due to the practical application within an organization, in which there is a longitudinal follow up for a period of two years and three months, showing the results obtained through interviews with people involved in this process of implementing environmental accounting.展开更多

This paper attempts to show a few consequences of this two perspectives named the technical interpretation of the knowledge and the essential interpretation of the knowledge. The proposal of this paper is to show that the philosophy is between the two frontiers delimiters: the border delimiters of the field and the city and the border between the useful and the useless, and indicate the relative importance of useful and useless for these perspectives.展开更多

The creative industry is rising rapidly at an unprecedented rate and becoming an important pillar of the economic development of all countries. In recent years, with the adjustment of China's industrial structure, creative industry has been paid more and more attention. Shanghai as the early development of Creative Industrial Park City, in recent years, the number of creative industrial parks in Shanghai has been more and more, according to the author statistics 2017 Shanghai, the current creative industrial park has reached 385, these industrial parks are mainly located in the city center, mainly engaged in the project to fashion design, cultural media, architectural design, Research and development design, consulting planning mainly.展开更多

The main issue is a public administration that benefits the private initiative instead of popular and environmental values and needs. Despite federal efforts at the end of the 20th and beginning of the 21 st century, water resources and urban reform policies are not able to ensure a connection between these two issues in the urban environment. Aiming at showing a new approach of citizenship and environmental rights in a developing country, Bauru, a Brazilian city located in the state of S^o Paulo, was used as a study case. In this scenario, the research is based on the action research method, in which a dynamic profile of the researchers was adopted in order to solidify environmental and social issues in the urban planning process. This article shows the advantages in using the river basin as an urban planning territory in the city master plan, and providing continuous technique support to the citizen, through the role played by the researcher-planner between government and population, as a way to possibly reach social and environmental interests. The territorial perception of the river basin by citizens brings effective environmental and social results.展开更多

The Park presents a particularity in its configuration: it is crossed by an important avenue in the city that splits it in two portions linked by an elevated pedestrian path. The two portions of the park have different accessibility degrees and intensity of use due to -- we believed -- the way they are inserted in the urban pattern. Both the barrier caused by the avenue crossing the park and the differences of connectedness of each portion to its surrounding grid result in the level of integration occurring in different ways, turning the east portion less intensely used. The all-line and visibility integration maps showed that this was the case, and confirmed that spatial configuration plays an important role in rendering the east portion less integrated and in explaining the more intense use of the west portion. Integration maps showed that the most integrated areas are indeed the most used ones, although line and visibility integration differed slightly as to the exact location. This difference was probably due to the way barriers were modeled, since permeability took into account the paths while visibility considered all the ground as a whole, provided there were no barriers to sight. Another explanation for the difference is the lake located at the center of the west portion which contributed to this location's visual integration but, on the other hand, displaced line integration to the larger convex space to the north.展开更多
