Habitus remains an ambiguous and cryptic concept,triggering drastic debate not only in sociology and anthropology but also in culture studies and literary criticism.The topic has been cited by a range of writers,notab...Habitus remains an ambiguous and cryptic concept,triggering drastic debate not only in sociology and anthropology but also in culture studies and literary criticism.The topic has been cited by a range of writers,notably Mauss,Husserl and Bourdieu.Even Bourdieu did not provide a clear,authoritative or coherent definition of the term in his work.Due to the fact that habitus plays an indispensable part of social constructionism,which defines our understanding of the world.It is necessary for parents,schools and the government to learn about this concept,and utilize it to guide their education practice and policy enactment.This essay will explore the theoretical concept of“habitus”and its interrelationship with“field”and“capital”.Then discuss the wide disparity in different social groups,in terms of habitus and capital in China.Followed by an analysis of the imbalances in Chinese rural and urban schools respectively,in the field of English language teaching.It aims to help readers better understand the poor performance of students who come from less advantageous social groups in language learning,rather than attributing their failure to their individual defects.The essay will also introduce the 2003 English curriculum reform,illustrate the current status of its implementation in various family upbringing and school locations and put forward some feasible proposals for parents,teachers,students and government to promote social equity in English language teaching in China.展开更多

The translation of Mr.Chen Wangdao’s version of The Communist Manifesto is of great significance in China,as it was the first complete translation of the text in the country and played a crucial role in introducing M...The translation of Mr.Chen Wangdao’s version of The Communist Manifesto is of great significance in China,as it was the first complete translation of the text in the country and played a crucial role in introducing Marxism to China.This translation project has been extensively studied by scholars from various disciplines,but there has been limited attention given to a sociological analysis of both the work itself and the translator.In this paper,we employ Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of social practice to examine the complex and dynamic social field during the May Fourth Movement,which was the historical context in which this translation project took place.We explore how the translator emerged within this field,which was characterized by intense competition and various power dynamics.We also investigate the changes in the translator’s social capital throughout this process,as he gained recognition and influence within the field.Furthermore,we delve into the formation of the translator’s translation habits,examining how his previous experiences and socialization shaped his approach to translation.We analyze the translator’s style and rhetoric during the translation process,exploring the ways in which his translation habits manifested themselves in the final product.By doing so,we aim to provide a comprehensive and multidimensional understanding of the translation production process of Chen Wangdao’s version of The Communist Manifesto.Overall,this paper contributes to the existing research on this translation project by offering a sociological analysis that sheds light on the social dynamics and individual agency involved in the production of this influential work.展开更多
Trends in human science seek to expand and situate the concept of the psychological individual emphasizing biology,society,or culture as causes,catalysts,or contexts.I enter the conversation,synthesizing Bourdieu and ...Trends in human science seek to expand and situate the concept of the psychological individual emphasizing biology,society,or culture as causes,catalysts,or contexts.I enter the conversation,synthesizing Bourdieu and Plessner especially regarding ambivalent positionality,habitus,and the experience of communication.Bourdieu’s conception of the cleft habitus/hexis of bodies in social space is interpreted alongside Plessner’s rendering of the lived-body(leib)and body-lived(körper).Beyond the materiality of the body(human being),both reject any essentialist ontology of the human person(being human)in a liberating axiology of communication in which life is lead and done as an open question.Bourdieu(1992,p.72)describes habitus as anti-individualist,anti-deterministic,and“anti-narcissistic”.Likewise,we must resist a bio-semiotic temptation to read Plessner as a proponent of culture’s origins in the umwelt.Bourdieu and Plessner focus on structuralist-semiotic and constructivist-phenomenological conditions constraining and enabling the experience of existence.The fluid boundaries of human identity are grounded in the perception and expression of culture in social space.The psychological,then,is an ongoing,emergent product of communication.This perspective is consequential,nurturing the contemporary critique of psychocentric discourse and opening possibilities for postpsychological culture.展开更多
