The banded texture in films prepared from nematic poly (1,4-benzamide) (PBA)/H_2SO_4 solution by shearing and without shearing has been studied by using microscopy techniques. The kinetic parameters of banded texture formation γ_c and τ_b were measured for nematic solution of PBA by using parallel-plate shearing apparatus. The banded texture was also observed in randomly packed domains for nematic solution of PBA on standing without shearing. The properties of banded texture show no difference between the two samples with or without shearing. 展开更多

A new liquid crystalline polyacetylene containing a phenyl benzoate mesogen (5) is synthesized, whose mesomorphic properties are found to be easily 'tunab1e' by simple mechanical perturbation. Thepolymerization of 10- [ 4 - (4' -methoxyphenoxycarbonyl )phenoxycarbonyl] - 1 -decyne (4 ) in itiated by theWCl_6-Ph_4Sn/dioxane complex yields polymer 5 with a M_w of 28400. The molecular structure of 5 ischaracterized by NMR, IR, and UV spectroscopy and its liquid crystalline behavior is investigated by DSC,POM, and XRD analysis. Upon mechanical perturbation, 5 exhibits unusual agitation-induced high-strengthdisclinations, shear-induced inversion walls, and solidification-induced banded textures. Such phenomenahave been observed in the main-chain liquid crystalline polymers with rigid backbones, but have seldom beenreported for the side-chain liquid crystalline polymers with flexible backbones, suggesting that the rigidpolyacetylene backbone of 5 plays a constructive role in inducing the novel molecular alignments. 展开更多

The crystalline morphology of a thermotropic aromatic polyester has been studied by microscopy techniques. Spherulites with ringed structure under polarizing micioscope were observed for solution cast specimens, They were composed of radially growing crystalline lamellae of thickness around 100. It was found that the molecules were packed in the thickness direction. Banded texture was observed in randomly packed domains for melt cast specimens. The bands have the same width and internal structure as those usually observed in oriented specimens of these polymers obtained by shearing their mesomorphic melt. 展开更多

In ferritic stainless steels, a significant non-uniform recrystallization orientation and a substantial texture gradient usually occur, which can degrade the ridging resistance of the final sheets. To improve the homogeneity of the recrystallization orientation and reduce the texture gradient in ultra-purified 17%Cr ferritic stainless steel, in this work, we performed conventional and asymmetric rolling processes and conducted macro and micro-texture analyses to investigate texture evolution under different cold-rolling conditions. In the conventional rolling specimens, we observed that the deformation was not uniform in the thickness direction, whereas there was homogeneous shear deformation in the asymmetric rolling specimens as well as the formation of uniform recrystallized grains and random orientation grains in the final annealing sheets. As such, the ridging resistance of the final sheets was significantly improved by employing the asymmetric rolling process. This result indicates with certainty that the texture gradient and orientation inhomogeneity can be attributed to non-uniform deformation, whereas the uniform orientation gradient in the thickness direction is explained by the increased number of shear bands obtained in the asymmetric rolling process. 展开更多

The oriented chitosan films obtained from pre-sheared liquid crystalline chitosan/dichloroacetic acid (DCA) solutions were studied by means of polarized optical microscopy (POM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), infra-red dichroism technique and wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). The sheer induced band texture in the film was found to correspond to the sinusoidal fibrillar microstructure along the shearing direction on the basis of POM and SEM observations. The sinusoidal fibril was found to be lying within the film plane. The model of chitosan molecular orientation in the pre-sheared film with band texture can be established assuming that the main chain orients in the shearing direction and the side group is perpendicular to the shearing direction. The WAXD azimuthal scanning at 2 theta = 20 degrees indicates that the (002) plane orients perpendicular to the shearing direction. 展开更多

Deep drawing properties of hot rolled gas cylinder steel was investigated by using HP295 steel in terms of microstructure, texture, yield ratio, plastic strain ratio (r value) and plastic anisotropy (Ar). The grains in the hot strip were largely equiaxed, and the texture was weak, containing a- and ?'fibre. Reheating temperature, finish roll ing temperature and cooling rate after rolling influenced the ferrite-pearlite band formation significantly, and the yield ratio increased steeply with decreasing coiling temperature below 630 ~C. The anisotropy is relatively high due to re- tained severe ferrite-pearlite band. A mechanism of the band formation due to manganese segregation is elaborated and confirmed validly, from which the measures to avoid the band formation are worked out. Rolling parameters have been optimized by the measures, and industrial production of the gas cylinder steel has been made possible with much improved r-and △r-values, while meeting other specifications. 展开更多
