The country was among the first point of collection of the specimen by Moser (1909) but subsequent attempts to locate and collect the specimen were unsuccessful possibly due to changed habitat and behaviour of Goliathus. Much of published work about the insect are based on the morphological characteristics of collected specimen which led to designation of six major species namely;Goliathus goliatus, G. cacicus, G. regius, G. albosignatus, G. orientalis and G. usambarensis, the last two being considered to exist in Tanzania. The current study reports on successful identification of habitats using biological cues and subsequently collected several Goliathus specimen that had been difficult to trace for more than a century. New insights into correct identity of the species by using a combination of morphological and molecular techniques have been set. The study has resolved that only one species, Goliathus orientalis with five sub-species exist in Tanzania.展开更多

Some biological habits were noted according to the records of field collection and observation, with references to the rearing in the laboratory. With weakly luminous egg, larva, pupa and female adult, and much weaker luminous male adult only when disturbed, P pygidialis Pic is considered as a diurnal firefly, and chemical signal, instead of light signal, is possibly its dominant means of male-female recognition.展开更多

Among them, P. nigripes Medvedev is recorded for the first time from China. A key to species from China is given. Illustrations of the male aedeagus and female spermatheca of each species are also given. The geographical distribution in China is analyzed briefly. The result indicates that Podagricomela mainly occurs in southern China, southwestern China, central China and north China, and the distribution center of this genus is in China. They always feed on Rutaceae.展开更多

It is the second troglophile species of the genus Itamus Schmidt-Gobel and is easily distinguished from I. cavicola (Moore), the other troglophile from Papua New Guinea, by its more elongate body, longer antennae, head without a supraorbital setiferous pore, and very shallow and impunctate elytral striae.展开更多
