He experienced the process from American liberal capitalism to imperialism. The writing style is also changed from funny to pessimistic. His works have been translated into many languages and highly praised by readers and media all over the word. One of his novels, the classic novel The Man that Corrupted Hedlyburg by Mark Twain. Its plot is designable and the description of psychology is profound. It is known as the treasure of Mark Twain's works. Various literary critical analyses on this story have been made from different perspectives; however, there is no complete and thorough analysis on it from the perspective of corpus-based stylistics. In order to achieve this target, an observed corpus and a reference corpus are both built. The observed corpus is the electronic text of The Man while the reference corpus consists of four electronic texts of Mark Twain. In this research, three softwares, AntConc,WordSmith Tools and UAM CorpusTool, are applied. This thesis conducts a systemic stylistics analysis to the corpus-based approach of The Man That Corrupted Hadlyburg at three levels, lexical level, syntactic level, discourse level. At last it summarizes theprevious study and points out the main purpose of the thesis. And in the meantime, the limitation exists in the thesis and the suggestions for the subsequent exploration are also concluded. It is hoped that this study will help English learners to better understand and appreciate the meaning and aesthetic value of the text.展开更多

It is famous for its successful humorous and sarcastic art which bases on the writer' s insight into human nature-honesty and hypocrisy. The paper focuses on the collision and conflict between the virtue and the temptation of the people in the society in this work. By the sharp sarcasm the writer exposes the essence of the pretended goodness and kindness and the profit-grabbing of the bourgeoisie.展开更多

At stake in those debates was the perception of the river's proper use: as a natural barrier for military defense, or as a conduit for global trade. After the Western powers unified to militarily suppress the Boxer Uprising in 1900, they attained their long-awaited goal of the right to transform the river for global trade as part of Article 11 of the Boxer Protocol: the Junpuju (or Huangpu Conservancy Board) was created and authorized by the central government to make the Huangpu River navigable for shipping vessels. Although the Junpuju continued the ethos of earlier extra-bureaucratic organizations established during the Self-Strengthening Movement, after 1901 the organization bore the authority of the central government. During the era of the New Policies, Qing officials were intent on revising the original terms of river conservancy so that they would be more favorable to Chinese sovereignty. At the same time, imperialist rivalries among the Western powers ruptured the apparent unity of the earlier alliance during the suppression of the Boxer Uprising. Before long, Western corruption in the Huangpu River dredging was brought to the attention of Qing officials, who deftly used it to recover Qing control over certain parts of the body of the river.展开更多

Previous domain adaptation research has achieved a lot of success both in theory and practice under the assumption that all the examples in the source domain are welllabeled and of high quality. However, the methods consistently lose robustness in noisy settings where data from the source domain have corrupted labels or features which is common in reality. Therefore, robust domain adaptation has been introduced to deal with such problems. In this paper, we attempt to solve two interrelated problems with robust domain adaptation:distribution shift across domains and sample noises of the source domain. To disentangle these challenges, an optimal transport approach with low-rank constraints is applied to guide the domain adaptation model training process to avoid noisy information influence. For the domain shift problem, the optimal transport mechanism can learn the joint data representations between the source and target domains using a measurement of discrepancy and preserve the discriminative information. The rank constraint on the transport matrix can help recover the corrupted subspace structures and eliminate the noise to some extent when dealing with corrupted source data. The solution to this relaxed and regularized optimal transport framework is a convex optimization problem that can be solved using the Augmented Lagrange Multiplier method, whose convergence can be mathematically proved. The effectiveness of the proposed method is evaluated through extensive experiments on both synthetic and real-world datasets.展开更多

The title of this book is taken from Shakespeare's tragedy Macbeth, implying the multiple themes of the novel. One theme is to discuss the corruption and collapse of the old southern traditional values through the description of the Compson family's corruption and the decline of southern plantation economy. In the novel, Faulkner seeks the way out for American south during the transformation period though the figures he created, but no one is successful in getting out of the bad influence of the Old South.展开更多

In the period from 1970-2001, the five countries with the largest number of terrorist attacks were Colombia, Peru, El Salvador, United Kingdom, and India. On the other hand, in the post-2001 context, the five countries with the largest number of terrorist attacks were Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan, India, and Thailand. One method for measuring in an aggregate way, how many people have suffered under terrorist attacks at national level is to analyze the correlation between some national wellbeing indicators and the number of terrorist attacks. The aim of this study is to analyze empirically the correlation between the global terrorist attacks and the countries wellbeing indicators. Five indicators show a strong relationship with the number of terrorist attacks in the case of the four most attacked countries in the post-2001 context. The authors consider that their findings can support the design of new strategies for preventing terrorist activities taking into account certain socio-economic and political drivers. The authors conclude that as such drivers are socio-complex, so it is necessary to adopt the complex adaptive system (CAS) approach to provide a new way of thinking about terrorism.展开更多

The results demonstrate that the slow-release fertilizer has a good release-effect of nitrogen and water conservation effect.
