This research investigated English learning strategy use by Non-English majors in Guangxi.Students’self-reports and questionnaires are conducted to collect data.The analysis finds that students have difficulty with long-term memory and internalization of words.The most frequently used strategies are some determination,memory and cognitive strategies.Social and metacognitive strategies are used less.The findings indicate that there are no great differences in the use of most strategies between groups of different proficient levels.Suggestions are provided to teachers based on the findings. 展开更多

Every language possesses three cardinal elements: phonetic element, lexical element, and grammatical structure, of which lexis is the fundamental pillar that supports the huge system of a language. The close relationship between language and culture is most readily seen in words. In fact, being the most active and elastic element of a language, vocabulary has the greatest culture-loading capacity. Vocabulary teaching is an integral part of foreign language teaching. Its efficiency has a direct relation with the development of the learners' communicative competence. Vocabulary is culture-bound, so it is self-evident that culture introduction is indispensable in teaching. The author attempts to make a comparison between English and Chinese cultures, to make clear how cultural disparities exist in English and Chinese vocabulary, and to put forward some constructive suggestions on how to integrate culture into vocabulary teaching in Chinese schools, so as to promote the efficiency of vocabulary teaching and improve learners' competence in intercultural communication. 展开更多

Recent years have witnessed a phenomenon that major English teachers in China have adopted the traditional teaching pattern, mechanically linking English pronunciations directly with the meaning of Chinese, which gradually dampens learners’ enthusiasm. The chief purpose of this paper was to design one English vocabulary teaching lesson based on incidental acquisition. More specifically, the questions raised are, on the one hand, whether incidental vocabulary teaching imprints differences on the learning outcomes for middle school students, and, on the other hand, whether incidental acquisition results in positive feedback between teachers and students. The technique we applied was referred to as questionnaires and interviews addressed to a sample of 68 students. Focusing on the effect of incidental vocabulary acquisition, the analysis demonstrated that it could enhance students’ vocabulary capacity. In addition, it was interesting to note that excellent students and average students tended to embrace the new teaching style while underachievers were on the opposite side. On this basis, it is recommended for English teachers to design English vocabulary lessons, adopting visual, auditory, oral, reading or writing training. More precisely, they should use phonics rules and patterns, holistic learning, classified vocabulary teaching, visual illustration or multimedia teaching to give lessons effectively and expand learners’ vocabulary. 展开更多

According to the New English Curriculum Standard for Chinese Primary Schools(NECSCPS), pupils are required to learn and master their expected vocabulary effectively. Based on metacognitive strategies, this paper takes as subjects one hundred pupils in Qingshi Central Primary School through questionnaire survey, explores problems in the application of metacognitive strategies to English vocabulary learning and teaching in primary schools. The research finds that in English vocabulary teaching in primary schools, teachers tend to place emphasis on vocabulary knowledge and pay little attention to teaching methods and skills well suited to pupils' vocabulary learning so that pupils are apt to lack interest in English vocabulary learning and the vocabulary required by NECSCPS. For this reason, the paper puts forward appropriate countermeasures based on metacognitive strategies in order to improve the current situation of vocabulary teaching and learning in primary English teaching, to help pupils to increase English vocabulary and to assist teachers in enhancing the effectiveness of English vocabulary teaching. 展开更多

With the rapid development of society,most of countries around the world are all attaching importance to the construction of the rule of law.Many countries are drawing lessons from each others’excellent legal achievements.Legal translation is an important branch of translation field and is playing an increasingly essential part in legal changes.With the deepening of China’s rule of law,China’s construction of legal system has stepped into a new phase.A large number of excellent Chinese legal documents are being translated into English,and many laws of Britain and America also have been translated into Chinese.The globalization of law has been an irreversible tendency.With the vigorous development of legal translation,how to correctly translate foreign legal achievements into Chinese has become a very arduous task for translators.The research field of legal translation includes the study of vocabulary,discourse,sentence and so on.The quality of translation of English legal vocabulary is key to deciding the quality of the whole translation of the legal text.Guided by the Skopos theory,which is a well-known theory put forward by German School of translation,the author makes a preliminary study on the translation of English legal vocabulary.By using and analyzing example sentences,the author makes summary about five characteristics of English legal vocabulary:common English vocabulary expressing legal meanings,use of ancient English vocabulary,parallel use of synonyms,use of modal verbs,use of professional terms and legal jargon.On the premise of conforming to the Skopos theory,four strategies of translating English legal vocabulary are summarized by the author according to these characteristics of English legal vocabulary,which are respectively fuzzy processing of English legal vocabulary,giving play to translators’subjectivity,possessing consciousness of legal texts,correct use of domestication and foreignization.The author stresses the important role of translators’subjectivity in the translation of English legal vocabulary,the correct use of domestication and foreignization and lastly links characteristics of English legal vocabulary,the Skopos theory and strategies of translation of English legal vocabulary effectively.The study has the certain innovation and reference significance in improving the quality of legal translation. 展开更多
